Corn or Chocolate Dipped Apples

One of the girls from our youth group (graduated now) is going to Africa for a year starting in September to intern with an organization that runs an orphanage and other community programs.  We're doing a last minute fundraiser for her at our 4th of July picnic and can't decide which of two options to go with.  Here are the options... let me know if you have any thoughts on which you think will be more successful...

1.  BBQ'd corn.  Cost is 25-33 cents each ear... selling price would be between $1-$2 (will probably make some deals:  i.e.  1 for $2, 2 for $3, 5 for $5)

2.  Chocolate dipped apples.  Cost is about $2.50 each... trying to figure out the selling price but you can get them at the stores here now for $10 (sounds steep to both of us... we're thinking $8).

Super random, I know, but any thoughts are appreciated!

Re: Corn or Chocolate Dipped Apples

  • Ya know, I love me some chocolate... but chocolate apples don't sound appetizing.  I'd go with corn... but it's not really corn season yet, is it?

    It is here!

  • Hmm...that is tough. I'm trying to quickly do the math in my head...it seems like you could make the same amount with both...I'm going to say the corn, though. Sounds more appetizing to me right now!
  • I vote corn because it just seems easier to prepare!

  • I like both....never had choc covered apples, but I'll eat anything with chocolate on it.  :)  BBQ'd corn is a new one too, and sounds yummy.  I agree the corn would be easier?

Oh my gosh, you must try both!

Oh I will!....Who is making me some????? Stick out tongue

  • I pick corn! We're in corn season too and the sweet white corn has been DELICIOUS!
  • Corn, hands down.  I may be biased since I'm from the corn state, though.  Yes, Karen, it is corn season.  About time!!!

I absolutely vote for the corn. It is a perfect fit for a July 4th picnic and something that people can add to their plates inexpensively. I think you'll sell many more than $8 apples IMO.

  • We've decided on corn!  Thanks for your thoughts!

Kristina -- the BBQ starts around 1pm and lasts until dark so come and get some corn!  We'll drizzle it with butter and sprinkle some chili lime powder on it and you will LOVE it.  And just for you, I'll make a chocolate apple too!  Wink

  • Definitely the corn. It's in season, goes with the event you're having, and I think people will be much more willing to pay "only" a $1 as opposed to $8.  The first thing I think of with the apples is warm outdoor BBQ = melted, messy chocolate.
  • I vote the corn.  It's easier to prepare and, at least around here, people love nothing more than corn.  Gotta love the corn state :)
  • p.s.  This post made me go out to the store for corn on the cob (among other things!)
