What shoes for gardening?

Hi, just wondering what kind of shoes do you recommend for gardening? I'm thinking of buying CROCs for the cushiony sole and ease of hosing it down.  Do you wear something else other than CROCs?

Re: What shoes for gardening?

  • I just throw on an old pair of sneakers. I don't have special gardening shoes.

  • I have crocs for easy work but then an old pair of shoes when I am using a shovel or want better support for my feet
  • I use my LL Bean Storm Chaser Clogs.  I didn't buy them for gardening (bought them for winter), but I like that they are 100% waterproof so if it's muddy or I'm watering or whatever my feet aren't gross.

I don't wear special shoes. Cheap flip flops or old sneakers are fine and washable.

For heavy digging, like planting large trees, I wear standard leather work boots.

  • I have Crocs (without the holes) for dry weather and galoshes from LL Bean for muddy days. Special shoes probably aren't needed, the galoshes were a rare splurge for me that seemed fun and the crocs were a gift.

  • Don't crocs have holes in the top?  I've done tons of gardening this season and I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally flicked dirt on my shoes with the shovel - having it in with my toes would creep me out.  (Flip-flops are different - they're open, the dirt's not trapped.)

I have Ladybug (that's the brand) gardening clogs.  They're rubber with a fabric sole insert and about $20.  MIL has LL Bean ones, I believe.  I know Target had some earlier in the season, not sure if they're still around.

  • I have a pair of CROCS that I wear when I garden. It's so easy to hose them off and dry them. Our Agway store has a selection of footwear for gardening. I prefer my CROCS because they tend to bend and turn easier when I need to get into hard or tight places.
  • We have a number of muddy areas and it sucks anything without a heel off of my foot, so I ended up with these Daily Shoes in the Plum Vine color from Muck Boots:

They're very comfortable.  Keep water, chemicals and mud out.  And don't slip off easily.

In the past I wore sneakers, but they're a pain to take on and off when you're going in and out of the house and don't want to track mud in.

  • I have an old pair of sneakers for gardening. I don't bother washing them. I just leave them in the garage and I only wear them for gardening and getting muddy.

Sometimes I will go barefoot if I'm not tromping in thistle or digging with the shovel.
