Is it foolish to get Iphone3GS at this point?

I posted below about being overwhelmed by smartphone choices.  Thanks for all of the help.

After much research (from this board, store visits, friends, etc) I've decided to get an Iphone.   I found a good deal on a new 3GS.  As I said before, I don't need the latest and greatest and am just venturing into smartphones.  With that said though, do you think it is a waste to get a 3GS at this point instead of opting to get the new Iphone4?

Re: Is it foolish to get Iphone3GS at this point?

  • I just bought a 3GS last week. While a small part of me regrets not getting the newest model available, it's still a huge step up from last phone and I'm very pleased with my purchase. The 8GB model is only $100 new at the store, and so far, as met all of my needs.

That's my thinking.  To go from a regular phone to an IPhone is a big enough leap for me at this point.  I just wanted to see what the more gadget savvy people thought.

  • I don't think it is a waste. The 3GS is still a really great phone.
    Hope is not a strategy.
  • I think that's a fine choice. I think you'd be a bit goofy to go for a plain 3G instead of a 3GS but not getting the newest isn't a dumb choice.

I currently have a 3G and I'm bummed that we didn't get many updates but I know that it's a marketing move to get me to get the latest model at some point. I don't have another upgrade until November 2011 so I'll be waiting until then. :)

  • Given that you won't be able to upgrade the phone for 2 years, I think it would be foolish not to get the iPhone 4.

At this time Apple is dropping support for the 3G and its OS. Based on how Apple has been releasing phones and supporting previous models, I would say it is very likely that if a new iPhone comes out next year that Apple would stop supporting the 3GS as that time.

Ditto this. I just got the new 8GB 3GS two days ago. Sure, some of the 4 features are drool-worthy, but I'm in love with my 3GS as it's a HUGE upgrade from my LG Shine.
