Can I Cage Squash & Sugar Pumpkins?

Cages are like this... (4 ft tall, made of galvanized steel)

I know I'd have to make sure the fruit is moved to the outside of the cage before they get bigger than the holes, but are there any other concerns?

My plants are quickly transcending the space in my SFG.

Re: Can I Cage Squash & Sugar Pumpkins?

  • On a walk this week, I saw a neighbor with her zucchini in a cage and thought it was brilliant.  I am not so sure about pumpkins though.  Last year my butternut squash plants grew about 40 feet.  I think they are best grow into the lawn.  DH used to lift the plants to mow.  We're doing this again this year with cantaloupe and it seems to work well.

I trellis watermelons and pumpkins, which is the same idea as the cage.  But tehy usually end up overrunning everthing anyway and I get my pumpkin/watermelon lawn.
