Hi all! I posted this on the travel board, but someone suggested that I post here, too. My husband and I are visiting Branford, Connecticut, at the end of the July for four days. I'm looking for recommendations for things to do and places to eat. We're staying at a rental house right on the Long Island Sound. I'd love to visit some antique/thrift stores and clothing boutiques. As far as restaurants, we'd prefer local places and nothing too touristy. Thanks for your recommendations!
Re: XP: Branford, CT
Lots of restuarants here are some I have liked that aren't too crazy, toruisty or expensive.
Great Mexian: Jalepeno heaven, looks dingy but food is soooo good
Eli's on the hill: nice pub/restuarant
New Haven which isn't too far has some really high end great resturants too.
Have fun

Couldn't have said it better myself. Jalapeno Heaven is awesome one of my favorite restaurants, but it really isn't the prettiest places in the world.
And yes you're only about 5/10 miles from New Haven and there are tons of great restaurants there.

Go to Stony Brook and take a Thimble Island Cruise.
Enjoy some awesome Margaritas at Chucks' Margaritas.
Walk around the shops on main street in Branford and have breakfast/lunch at Cohen's.
Travel to the outlet stores in Clinton/Westbrook (15-20 minute drive)
Go to Lenny and Joe's in Madison and have a delicious lobster roll.
I grew up in Branford, there is a TON of really fun stuff to do. I highly recommend taking a cruise of the Thimble Islands, there's rumors that Captain Kid left some treasure out there. There are a couple of really nice parks: Foote Park, which is right on the water, the Supply Pond, easy hiking and Youngs Pond, which has some nice and easy hiking trails and some old house ruins. There are a bunch of beaches that you can go to, Branford Point, Stony Creek and they usually have live music on the green on either Thursday or Friday night (It's been a while so I don't really remember which night it is).
Ashley's Ice Cream is in the center of town, much better than Ben and Jerry's. There is a restaurant right near Foote Park called Dockside Seafood and Grill, it's located in Bruce and Johnson's Marina on Block Island Road. We actually went there the day before the wedding for a Bridesmaid lunch. Really good food and a great location. Mango's is really good and I heard Assiago's is awesome as well. Donovan's Reef is good for drinks at night, they usually have a live band, they are in the center of town as well. Lenny's Indian Head is a really good restaurant as well, it fills up fast though because the locals love to go there. I'd stay away from the Chowder Pot. The food is okay, there are much better places to eat in Branford. Since it is right off of the highway it gets really crowded with people coming off of the highway.
I would also explore Stony Creek, it's a really neat part of Branford. Lots of old houses and cute charm.
Have fun!!
