Hi Kim,

I saw below that you live in Japan now and I wanted to ask you a few questions about things to do there. My husband and I will be going for about 16 days in September for a business trip of his. Neither of us have ever been. We will be flying in and out of Tokyo and staying on two military bases-- The cities are Iwakuni and Atsugi. Do you live on base with your husband? If so, which one?

Do you have any suggestions for "must-do" things to try or places to see?

If you would rather e-mail me, here is my address -- alli at byersfam dot com. Thanks for any suggestions you might have!

  • Hey! Sorry I'm just writing you back- I don't check this board too often, since it is so quiet here now. Anyway, YEA for Tokyo! You are going to have a great time here! We are stationed at Yokota, closer to Tokyo than the 2 you will be at, although Atsugi isn't TOO far (you'll discover that nothing is far away, but it takes forever to get anywhere). Hmmm...must dos:

Since you will be at Iwakuni, you should go over to Hiroshima and see the WW2 memorial museum and peace park and atomic bomb dome. It is fairly close.

Kyoto is another great place to see, very classic Japan. I don't know how much time you will have since your DH will be working, but it is worth spending a few days there if you can.

Nagano is really neat. It is north of Tokyo and farther from you guys, but that is where the snow monkeys are. It won't be snowing then, of course, but the monkeys will still be there in the hot springs. It's really cool to see. That is the snow ski area too, but I think you could hike the hills if you wanted too, since it isn't ski season. Mt Fuji is also awesome to hike, but it is only open July-Aug.

Since you are staying at bases, I would check out their ITT office. they always have weekend trips that are fun to go on, and cheaper than on your own or off the economy. We've been on several and they are pretty fun, plus they provide the transportation. I'll email you the links in a bit.

You have to do Tokyo of course- go up Tokyo Tower, see the Shinjuku intersection (busiest in the world), party in Roppongi if you desire (haven't done that myself- a baby doesn't really allow for late night parties :) There is also a bus that goes to the main districts of Tokyo. I think it is like 500 yen/person/day (about $5.50) which is awesome and you can get on/off wherever and whenever you want, so that might be easy and fun.

I'll email you more ideas as they come to me. I love living here and seeing/doing stuff. In fact, if you are up this way, even though we don't "know" each other, it could be fun to hang out one day and get lunch or something if you want. Esp if your DH has to work some and you are on your own. Anyway, email me if you have other questions or whatever:

    kimcochran@yahoo.com

I'm excited for your trip. I'm sure you'll have a great time!!

  • Kim, You are so awesome! Thank you so much for all of this information! I've forwarded it on to my DH.

I might be e-mailing you in the future to ask a few things if you don't mind.

    Thanks again!
