orchids -- what now?

I bought a beautiful orchid plant.  The 20 or so blooms have lasted about 2 months, but now are beginning to die and fall off.

What to I need to do to keep the plant alive and to produce new blooms?

This is my first orchid plant so I'm really at a loss.  Advice would be greatly appreciated.

TIA!

Re: orchids -- what now?

  • It's probably planted in moss.  I'd get it out of there ASAP before the roots start to rot.  In my experience, that keeps it too wet and compact.  Go to the nursery near you and ask for an orchid bark mix (usually bark, charcol and bits of vermiculite or something, I forget what the 3rd thing is called.)  Pull your orchid out of the moss.  Pull off all the mossy bits.  Trim off any roots that are black.  Get a pot that's about the diameter of the roots.  Hold it in the pot while you shake bark, etc into it.  Give the pots little shakes as you pour bark in to the pot.

Water it when the bark gets dry.  For me that's a good soaking once a week. Don't let it stand in water or anything, but get the bark good and wet.  I also do a weak orchid food solution once a week after I water. It needs the orchid food to bloom again.  Other than that, just find a window where it's happy, and it should bloom again (though maybe not for a year.)

  • Thank you!  I'll take care of this this weekend.  I just hope it isn't too late as I've left it in the pot that it came in since I bought it 2 months ago.  I'm just suprised it lasted this long, though now I'm attached to it so hopefully I'll be able to keep it alive and blooming,
  • It is important to snip off the stem where the flowers bloomed just above where the first flower was.  This will often encourage an off-shoot to form there which will bloom again.
