Changing your name

Hello all,

I just got married 1 month ago and I finally have time to go change my name.  I know that I have to go to the Social Security Office first, but my question is, do I have to wait until I get my new social security card before I go to the DMV?  I tried calling the DMV and was put on hold for 20 minutes with no end in sight.

Thanks in advance,

Stephanie

Re: Changing your name

  • Three years ago when I did it, I needed the new SS card, and I'm pretty sure I took my marriage license as well when getting the new license.  Be sure to change the registration on your car at the same time too.  For whatever reason, when I changed my driver's license, they didn't update the registration.

They didn't change my name on my registration either - I just renewed my license online for the past 2 years, and then this year FINALLY went there in person and changed my name on the registration. Stick out tongue

  • I think the SS office gave me a paper to give to the DMV.

  • In Michigan, I think you only need to bring your marriage certificate to the secretary of state. I only changed drivers lic - I need to get registration and title to veh switched over too. I also need to get social security card changed too - I have kinda been forgetting about that. And we got married in Dec 2008.

  • You won't need you new SS card to change your license. You will just need your marrige certificate. As for your registration, you don't have to change that ever. You just need to sign your maiden name when you go to sell the car.
