Rain is making my tomatoes split :(

So, the 4 inches of rain we've gotten in the last 2 days courtesy of Alex's spinoff are decimating my tomatoes. It looks like 90% of my tomatoes have cracked and split open. Mother Nature, I am hating you right now.

Re: Rain is making my tomatoes split :(

  • are they ripe?

if they *just* split open b/c of rain, why can't you use them?  especially in something like tomato sauce or salsa where they would be chopped up anyway?

  • I harvested some, but I gave up because it is pouring rain right now. Plus we are leaving in 30 minutes to go out of town for the 4th.

  • This is my first year with a garden.  I noticed yesterday many of my tomatoes are split too!  We have been getting lots of rain in Florida the past few days.

Why does rain cause them to split?

I think it's b/c the cells are absorbing water at a faster rater and growing internally than the skin can grow externaly. As a result, it splits open. (Kinda like the same principle behind us getting strech marks, except we get scar tissue)
