Murder Mystery Party Questions

Has anyone ever hosted a murder mystery party?  If so, did you write it yourself or did you get one of the boxes?  If you've been to one, was it a blast and did everyone get into it?

DH and I love to host themed parties and we'd like to host one around Halloween but we're not sure since we don't know anyone that's done it before really.. We have about 5-10 people that would probably be into it..

Re: Murder Mystery Party Questions

  • I used a kit that I just downloaded.  I did an all female party and we had a BLAST!  We plan to do it annually.  The kits are very easy to use and they tell you exactly how to plan the party.  I sent out the roles ahead of time so people could dress accordingly.  It would be perfect at Halloween!  Have fun.
  • We buy the boxed game.  Have done it a couple of times.  We have a great time, I follow the guidelines and adapt where necessary (we certainly bring out the alcohol which adds to the participation).  Our guests are pretty good about participating - which is essential - full costumes, being into the role, etc.

    Enjoy!

  • We did one last October and had so much fun!  We are going to make it an annual tradition.  We did buy the box and it came with everything we needed including ideas for the menu and decor.

The only tip I would have is to make sure the guests you invite will go all out and really get into it.  Oh, make sure they are reliable too - I had a main character back out the day of and we had to have my MIL sit in - thankfully she was even available.

  • Ditto needing reliable friends.  It sucks if people back out last minute, because you really need everyone.

  • Thanks for the help! I think maybe we'll do the boxed kit first and if I'm feeling ambitious and it goes well, perhaps we'll try to write it!
