summer flowers

I live in zone 5, and I would like some summer color. I have tons of spring flowers that are all gone now. I had some day lilies the last few weeks, but they've mostly stopped blooming. Is there anything that blooms in July and August for my zone?

I don't know why I love flowers so much. I just feel disappointed when I look at rocks and mulch.

I'd prefer perennials if possible. I don't like to dig things up in the fall.

Re: summer flowers

  • perennials I planted that are blooming now (also in zone 5) are gladiolus, black eyed susan, and 2 hydrangea bushes.  Everything else I plant to get lots of color is an annual

  • Perennials blooming in my garden now (zone 5b): butterfly bush, day lilies, hydrangea, salvia, coreopsis, yarrow, some of my aster, butterfly weed & catmint.  Ready to bloom any day: more aster, garden phlox, hummingbird mint (agastache), balloon flower, echinacea & black eyed susan.

eta: russian sage is also in bloom & my rose of sharons will be bursting with blooms this year (later in the summer) - I know you said flowers but they're still so nice to look at!

  • Blooming in full sun right now (zone 7): coneflowers, liatris, bee balm, royal catchfly, stoke's aster, spiderwort, agastache, scarlet sage, verbena, yarrow, milkweed, swamp hibiscus, and all varieties of coreopsis.  In the shade I've got wood asters and indian pinks just beginning to set flower buds and the heucheras have just finished, but they have pretty foliage.

Hardy geraniums (Cranesbill, which is different from pelargoniums, which have the common name "geranium").  I have 'Rozanne's and they are covered with blooms from April until November (admittedly I'm in Zone 9b, so the growing season is extended).  They spread (not too much) and mound beautifully.  They require no care beyond the compost I put on everything else, but they are gorgeous.

Other things I have blooming now are feverfew (self sows), asters, cone flowers, butterfly bush, roses, nicotiana (self sows), chinese foxglove, callas, hydrangeas, ground morning glory, perennial hollyhocks, and lantana.  I'm not sure what of that would work or reseed in zone 5.

I am in zone 5 and my rozannes bloom from late May through frost. Love them!

  • My shasta daisies are in bloom now and last through early fall.  They also get bigger every year and are so cheery.
