Shopping on the 4th of July (clicky poll)

I'm having this internal battle, so I figured I'd see what everyone else thought.  I want to go shopping today, mainly because it's the weekend and I have a few things to pick up, but part of me feels bad "endorsing" stores that don't need to be open, being open on a holiday.  Especially a holiday like this that really each American should get to celebrate.

FWIW, when I worked retail (ie:  Club Disney), I worked the 4th of July.  It didn't really bother me.  We might have closed early that night though.  I think 4th of July is an important holiday, but not as high up there as say Christmas or Thanksgiving (when I think everything should be closed except necessity places).  Hopefully some places will maybe close a little early so people can go watch fireworks, but I don't think it's wrong for retail places to be open today.

I agree with PP, when I worked Retail, it didnt really bother me to be working on the 4th. We did close early at like 6, I think. So enough time to go home eat some bbq and then watch Fireworks.

And I may need to do some shopping today, but it may just be pushed till tomorrow.

I worked in hospitality and had to work every holiday at some point in my carrer, including big ones like Thanksgiving and Christmas.  So while it sucks that some people do not get it off, you know that is a possibility when you go into a position like retail (or hospitality).  I think it is more important to stimulate the economy right now if you are able to financially!  Go enjoy the great sales!

When I worked retail I loved working on Independence Day! I got double time and 1/2 or something like that. I felt rich after.

I used to have to work 4th of July when I was a waitress and it didn't really bother me...sure I wanted to watch fireworks but other than that, I didn't care that I was working on this holiday.

I loved workign on the 4th because when i was in the union (working at the grocery store) we got double time and a 1/2! it was awesome... i would just wear my swim suit under y uniform got home for lunch eat some bbq get in the pool for a bit then head back to work.  But we usually closed the store earlier so we could all still see fireworks
