It depends on what you intend to grow.

  • What part of the country are you in?  If you're just putting annuals in the ground, I'm sure it would be fine.

If you're not trying to time a harvest, go for it! I'm still planting annuals and perennials. TONS of them! I was too busy to do it in April and May, so only now is my garden beginning to burst all over with color.

  • I just planted a ton today.  I got some really good deals on bulbs etc a month or so ago and had to wait till I had the ground prepped before I could plant them.  It gets pretty hot and dry hear in the summer (and I'm not a good waterer Embarrassed) so I have my expectations set really low.

In short, I think it will be fine, but I personally wouldn't spend tons of cash on it.

  • It really depends on where you live, and what you plant. Think about what the rest of the summer is like (how hot), and how long. Make sure you plant things that can withstand the temps, and if you want to grow veggies etc, check how long it takes to maturity, so you know if you have time this summer or not.

  • I'm also in NOVA.  I think you would be fine with anything you can buy in plants at the store now.  It may be a little late to try starting things from seed and it's too early/late to plant bulbs.

Also - Merrifield's prices tend to be higher than most other places, although their quality is good.

Potting soil, compost, mulch, etc. seems to be cheapest at Southern States in Manassas.  And they load it all into the car for you.
