Re: Cleaner for soft-wood floors?

  • We had bamboo floors which scratched very, very easily. What I would recommend is this:

    1) Area rugs, area rugs, area rugs. We had small rugs at every entry way to the house, in the kitchen and in each room.

    2) For the other uncovered areas we would sweep, dry mop then vacuum the area regularly (yes, we did all these things)

    3) Then we had our cleaning lady mop the areas with...water and a tiny amount of dish soap. Yes, dish soap. You can also use vinegar and water. A lot of other wood cleaners will strip the sealant off the floor or dull them and it will ruin them in the first try. The only way to get that back is to sand them and redo it.

  • By tiny, you mean a tiny squirt for about a gallon of water...or more than that?  I've been reading about the wonders of dish soap recently, so I will give that a shot.  I just moved in and need to do the first clean.  There's a good bit of dust and dirt tracked in from the folks who painted and re-modeled before we moved in.

I'm also going to invest in some more area rugs :D  Thank you!

  • Would a steam mop work?

Yep. I wouldn't say it's an exact science but a squirt or two per gallon of water. Oh--and make sure that your mop isn't soaking wet! Squeeze it out to damp.

Personally--and again this is with bamboo--and I would say it would be a problem with soft wood--I would be wary of steam cleaning--the reason why is there is a danger of swelling with putting hot water onto the boards.

I would say..NEVER wax your floors--Now that is for bamboo--I don't know what you have--but for us it was like this huge No--never ever!

I would definitely sweep and get the micro fiber dry mop too--that will help get up the dust  and dirt.

There are some really good places to look for area rugs--Target of course, but also Home goods, Cost Plus, pier one places like that--and then even higher end places like Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel--we got a couple rugs from both PB and C&B on clearance and floor samples for super cheap...basically what you end up doing is..becoming obsessed with area rugs and looking for good deals all over!

Don't overlook the area rug that is simple like sea grass or knotted rugs :)

Oh--one more thing--put those little nubs on ALL your furniture! Trust me! I put a 4 in scratch in our floor by trying to move a coffee table :(.
