Surprise in our compost...

We have a rubbermaid bin for compost. I opened it today to add some stuff and there were a couple of the biggest crickets I've ever seen in there. DH went to stir the bin and there's a whole bunch of crickets and down a little further - a tons of cricket larvae squirming around! I wasn't ready for that surprise and I've got to admit I squealed and jumped around like an idiot.

Is this okay? I wouldn't have been surprised by worms, but crickets?

Re: Surprise in our compost...

  • Are you positive they're crickets? I had a colony of black soldier flies start up in one of my old worm bins once. They kind of look like crickets but they help out with the breakdown of foodstuffs. I'd love to have my own BSF bin one day, but the habitats are too expensive right now. Either way, I don't think they'll hurt the worms.

  • Definitely crickets - crickets on steriods. Apparently our kitchen scraps are like cricket growth hormone Stick out tongue

  • That's neat.  I used to catch crickets as a kid.  I think they're fine in there.  You'll get serenaded all summer.

ETA: In the "suprise in our compost" department, I opened it the other day to find several potato plants!  Apparently the eyes we had cut off a potato weeks ago sprouted, and got all the way to making leaves in our compost before we noticed it.  It was pretty nifty.  We've found mushrooms in there too.
