I'm planning on buying my husband a home brewing kit for his birthday this year, and was thinking about getting Mr Beer until I read some subpar reviews on Amazon. I'm now leaning towards Coopers Micro Brewery kit. Has anyone had any experiences with home brewing kits? Any recommendations?
Re: Home Beer Brewing Kits?
I bought my H the Mr. Beer kit for his birthday this year. He's made 3 different kinds and we have loved them all. I highly rec the Mr. Beer kit!!
Also, the 3 kinds that we've done so far are...
American Blonde Ale, Cowboy Golden Lager & Canadian Draft. I also bought him the St. Patrick's Day Irish Stout, but we are saving that for March.
The Mr. Beer kits have worked fine for us for two different kinds of beer. We weren't too thrilled with the taste of one (honey something) but they come out looking, tasting and smelling like a regular microbrew.
What were the issues in the Amazon reviews?

Thanks for all the opinions!!! The Amazon reviews for Mr Beer weren't bad, but there were some comments about it not always brewing the best beer, and that it would be good for a beginner looking to brew one or two batches. My husband loves microbrew beer, so I have a feeling he would be looking to upgrade after a couple batches.
I briefly looked into the more elaborate kits available to purchase online that are several hundred dollars more. But I think I'm leaning towards Coopers.
If you think he would like to brew a lot and upgrade. I would start with a kit like this
http://www.northernbrewer.com/brewing/starter-kits/basic-starter-kit.html
This equipment can be reused forever and if he wants to upgrade this will be the style he needs. I don't think this includes ingredients, but they run around $30 a kit for everything. They have some fancier kits as well.
We brew quite a bit and have moved beyond these kits too, but these are a great start.
