Routers, Comcast, etc.

We have comcast for internet and cable. We tried hooking up our wireless router from Linsys or whatever it is when we first got it and it was always kicking Mike off internet if I would try to get one after he had been on. So we took it off and I have be able to connect to internet just fine without using the router. Now I am having problems and most of the time I cannot access the internet now. We tried hooking up the router again last night but it wasn't connecting, etc. So SOL. I am thinking about getting another router other than Linksys   maybe Dlink. Or does comcast have a modem that is both a modem and a router? Let me know what you all know or think.

Re: Routers, Comcast, etc.

  • If I were attacking this problem I would first try to figure out if it was the Router or the Modem that was the problem. (which I think you may have already done)

If you can connect to the internet while plugged into the modem, then the router is the problem.  If you cannot, then it is the modem or your ISP.

Does your router have a place for a network wire?  If so, can you connect to the internet from the wire?

Also, a good check would be the wireless settings on both the router and the computers.  I can't tell you exactly what to look for, but they could easily cause your problem.

As far as brands go, I've had equal luck with DLink and Linksys routers.  How old is your current router?

  • Our router is over a year old. I know that we need to update our modem through comcast even though it works. Need a newer model. Was just wondering if there is a such thing of a combined router and modem that comcast would have or should I just go out and get a new router like Dlink?
