Recommend a nearby vacay spot please
Hello Ladies:
As some of you know, my mom will be visiting us for about 2 months. She is insistent on visiting another state. 
Which state (nearby that we can take bus/amtrak to) do recommend that she and I visit? Are there any fun events/places in that state/area that we could visit? I am thinking of taking a weekend trip with her in September.

I am a much bigger fan of traveling by train. Look at the places along Amtrak lines to get some ideas.
Newport, RI-- touring the old mansions
Boston, MA-- Red Sox and other fun stuff
Philly, PA-- historical sites and the Bell
DC-- lots of museums and sites
In state: Saratoga Springs, LI, Hudson Valley, Niagara Falls (this seems to be really popular with international guests)
In state, I'm really glad I saw Niagra Falls. The Canadian side was much more beautiful. For our anniversary in 2 weeks, we're driving to Montauk point and staying in Riverhead for a shorter trip.
DC is an easy amtrak trip away, probably faster than driving on the weekend.
