Fish Oil Question

I was told I should be taking fish oil for my back. I read an article this morning about all of the benefits of taking this supplement everyday. My question is does anyone here take it?

Re: Fish Oil Question

  • Fish oil? Who told you that? If you don't mind my asking, what kind of back problem do you have?

  • I know a lot of people that take fish oil pills, mostly for the heart healthy benefits. It does help with inflammation so I guess it would help for back aches too.

I guess it's the Omega 3's in it. You can also eat a lot of fish that are hearty in Omega 3 too if you don't want to take a pill (salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, herring, and trout.)

  • I recommend that if you take fish oil, you do the pills. Not to be nasty, but my mom made me take the liquid form and omg, I threw up all over myself. Worst taste ever!! yuck Ick!
  • I have a fragmented L5-S1, thank you high risk job. I see a pain doctor in miramar (I love her!!!!) and she was the one that suggested I take the fish oil. To be honest and gross I am afraid to burp up the taste of fish. I dont eat fish because I just dont like it, and the idea of burping the taste of it makes my tummy turn.  I was told if I freeze the pills it shouldnt happen.

Do you have back problems eli?

Yeeesss, unfortunately. For almost eight years. I have a herniated disk at L5-S1 and I also see a pain management doctor, but in South Miami. He never mentioned fish oil - but I used to take it for a non-related reason and yes, you will definitely burp it up and it will be gross.

However  - I HIGHLY recommend taking a glucosamine chondroitin supplement. They sell them at GNC, Target, Walgreens - I take one every day and when I don't, I can definitely feel it. I take the triple strength Target brand (Up & Up), but I've also taken the Costco and Walgreens brand and Move Free and they all pretty much work the same.

What have you tried? How long have you had the condition?

I injured my self at work in 2006. I was able to continue doing my job until 2008 when I lost complete controll of my right leg in a sudden and intense onset of pain in my back. Since then besides the hopsital stay, I was in therapy for a year to learn to reuse my body and I have had 3 epidurals over the past 2 years. I actually have a fragmented disc, basically there is nothing left in the space. I have to start therapy again this week because I relapsed 2 weeks ago. I went to the spinal instituate at Jackson, but because I am so young, they wont perform surgery.

I will ask about taking the things you mentioned when I go to see the doctor again at the end of the month. If I can be of any help let me know though. Unfortunately I know far too much about it!

Lol, I have to laugh at this.  I take iron pills for anemia and they always make me burp (just one little burp haha) but my husband calls it my "hub cap" burp.  It's gross and tastes exactly like you'd expect from an iron pill.

Don't know much about back problems so  I can't comment on whether fish oil is good for it, but I know the pills are good for alot of things, so it can't hurt!

ugh... sounds like the story of my life, too.. I've also had three epidural injections, and surgery isn't an option for me either. Another thing to talk to your doctor about - when I'd tried everything but surgery - therapy, epidural injections, muscle relaxants, massage, traction, chiropractors, accupuncture - NOTHING worked - my doctor prescribed Lyrica to help me deal with the nerve pain and it completely changed my life. I was taking it for about a year and noticed a huge change. I weaned myself off of it eventually because I couldn't be on medication anymore (we are TTC) and that's when I turned to natural remedies like glucosamine chondroitin. Unfortunately, it doesn't work nearly as well as Lyrica but those are the sacrifices we make, I guess. It does help, though.

  • I take fish oil because of my diet.  It's supposed to help give energy and also reduce the amounts of colds and flu you may get.  My DH takes it too for his ADD.  I think it's actually supposed to help a lot of ailments.

The burping problem is definitely an issue.  You need to make sure you get the coated pills to prevent that problem.  They are larger and much more expensive, but they are worth it and eliminate the burping.  The cheaper ones are pretty bad.

Oh and for you ladies that have back pain, I saw a pain relief massage therapist in Miami for many years.  The place I went to specializes in pain relief and have worked on many big name people, including the heat and many athletes.  No other massage has ever worked for me (even at hospitals and such), but their massage techniques are different and truly work.  Let me know if you want the info,  I think it's definitely worth a shot :)

  • I take cod liver oil for my asthma per my holistic doctor.  I have not had an attack in 3 years!
