How long do you let your roots grow out before you get them touched up?

Re: Poll: For those who dye their hair

  • Oh gosh...  well I have to do mine like every eight weeks or so... sinc emy hair is darker the greys just show that much faster :(

  • I don't know if highlights count, but I only do highlights like once a year, or every couple years (my hair has blonde in it naturally, so it isn't that drastic when it's growing out).  So, never?

I'm sure this is not helpful though, and not really what you are looking for...  ;-)

  • My hair grows super fast so usually every 6-8 weeks.  I'm naturally a dirty blonde, but my roots always come in dark at first- since I dye it light blonde it drives me crazy to see roots!

  • Once upon a time I used to get my hair done every 6-8 weeks.  Mostly highlights, but some low-lights too.

Now?  I'm lucky if I do it every 6-8 months.  Crying  Probably doesn't help that I haven't found a stylist here that I love that doesn't make me take out a personal loan to get it done.

  • I have about 1/4-1/2" roots right now, and they really piss me off.  I can't remember when I went last (probably 1-2 months ago).

Anywho...I'm just trying to gauge if I'm letting it my roots grow out too much?

  • mines like every 4 or 5 months hahaa i sometimes rock the roots longer then i should like now for example hahaha

  • I am not really sure. I had dyed my hair red, then brown then I saw the roots and didn't care, then I dyed it right before I left for Boston and in between the brown and black, I'd say it was like 8 months. I am going back again in Sept because the box black, just fades so quickly on me and the Lady I go to is out for three weeks in August for surgery.

  • I should add that I do my hair myself now, so it doesn't last as long.  I used to go to a girl that would do 3 different shades of blonde and I could go about 10-12 weeks in between.  I would say anything more that 1/4" is enough to make me dye it.

  • It depend on what color I dye it. If I dye it darker, I let it grow out before I re-dye it because it's not too much darker than my normal color. If I dye it lighter, I re-dye when it starts to look bad(about an inch from my roots).

  • I do mine around every 6 weeks.. I always do a cut/trim with it too, so when my layers seem too long and my roots are showing (they're dark!), it's time! I grew out my hair a bit for the wedding, though, so now I'm just waiting a little longer so I can chop it off and get my highlights re-done! Woot!
  • I just get highlights every 3-4 months.  My hair is naturally dirty blond, I just get a light blond weaved in.  So I am not much help, I do not really get roots.

  • Ugh.  So I'm big on hair care... huge.  But I'm trying to grow mine out to my natural color (dirty blonde).  I used to do every 4-5 weeks with my hair stylist, because grow out makes me puke.  She's now pushed me out to every 8 weeks, have to have grow out to get my hair back to natural, and we're weaving in a lot less- mainly just weaving in some lighter blonde on the top, and some more of my natural tones into the rest.

I hate grow out, though the up keep was just getting a bit to time consuming for me.

  • Usually way too long!  When I am on top of it I would get them done every 6-8 weeks.  I have no excuse since my future sister-in-law does my hair.
