Plastic Compost Bins

I know that there are many plastic compost bins you can buy or make your own.  But I worry about using plastic.  You aren't supposed to drink out of water bottles that have been in a hot car because the plastic leaches chemicals out, would this be the same for a plastic bin outside in the sun?  I wouldn't want to then put this compost on my garden if this is true.  Is this something to really be worried about?

Re: Plastic Compost Bins

  • I am not worried about it. I am not sure if it makes a difference in the type of plastic that a water bottle is vs the compost bin.
  • I would not worry about this. Plants are amazing cleaning machines! How else could you get old horse poop and rotted garbage (AKA compost) and pollution-filled water (rainwater or water from a hose containing lead) to nourish amazing, healthy, nutrient-rich organic fruits and veggies? Plants are amazing filterers.

  • I also don't worry about this.  No other substance holds heat in as well as plastic, and as pixie said plants are amazing filters.  The organic farm I work for at the Farmer's Market makes their compost in long rows under black plastic fabric.
