My dog is older and hates going to the vet, so I am looking for someone who would be understanding and patient with her. We live close to downtown Orlando, but I am open to travel if it is worth it.
TIA!
Re: Recommend your vet
We have used the Banfield Pet Hospitals inside of PetSmart recently and they're REALLY nice and VERY kind.
I can't remember the name of LeeAnn's vet that she uses for her animals, but she really likes them...
Steph...I didn't realize that you use PetSmart...we need to talk about that!
But yes, I LOVE my vet. We see Dr. MacPherson at Tuskawilla Oaks Animal Hospital. She is great. She is really patient and answers all of my silly questions. That is probably too far for you, though. Good luck finding someone...I hate looking for new vets, doctors, etc.
We've been using Kirkpatrick Veterinary for the past several years. Our pets have a lot of health issues so we're either visiting or calling all the time, and the staff there is great with us (not just the docotor but the techs and front desk, too). Compared to other vets we've used, we feel like we get a lot of personal attention, and it's easy to get ahold of someone if we have a question.
Their location is just south of downtown, on Orange Ave. between Kaley and Michigan. Their Web site is www.kirkvet.com.
Good luck! :-)

I'm probably too far away - but I recently took the Wonder Cat to Clermont Animal Hospital. The Wonder Cat is diabetic and has a heart condition - so I did a LOT of homework before I choose that vet for him. Unfortunately, we had to have one as close to home as possible, cause cars cause the Wonder Cat to have panic attacks.
But we really like them. Dr. Mike is very holistic in his approach - pushes a healthy (no grain/gluten) diet, vitamins and supplements, etc. I think it will be a good relationship.

Hey, one of my cats is diabetic too!
I never knew cats could be diabetic, guess I never thought about it really.
Thanks for giving me some options, I'll check them out!
Now if I could get the dog to stop freaking out since it is storming...
I liked the PetSmart vet but HOLY COW are they expensive!!
There's an animal hospital in Altamonte Springs...I think it's just called the Altamonte Springs Veterinary Clinic. The doctor there is really good and so patient with the animals! He's so sweet to them to the point of almost sounding kooky. I can't remember his name right now though.
You must be talking about Dr. Larkins. When you said "kooky" I knew it was him He is our vet. I am not a fan of the front desk staff, but the nurses and the doctor are exactly what I am looking for in regard to caring for our 4 cats. He has been a pure blessing to my husband and I because all four of our cats have special needs. He has even come in to the office for an emergency we had one time and operated on my cat. I am dealing with devistating mammary cancer in my oldest cat right now, and Dr. Larkins has been amazing treating her for it, even through the cancer seems to be winning due to it being soooooooo agressive. I wont go anywhere else with my pets though. No way.
And I am not a petsmart/Banfield fan becuase they cmpletely misdiagnosed my diabetic cat when he was little with "stress" and never thought to order blood work for his symptoms so no way am I ever going back there again. The bill for the "stress" was several hundred dollars too, and they sure plugged their "special diet food" on my cat! The cat had diabetes and they told me he was afraid of the fire engine sirens near my house which caused his lethargy, etc.. Good grief!!!!
We had a bad vet once in Miami. The Wonder Cat had a bad UTI, blocked bladder and his kidney's were shutting down (this was before the diabetes). The doctor claimed to have medicated him, treated him, given him an IV and prescribed some pain meds while he healed.
Turns out he did neither. He also put him on a human dose of Morphine! I was killing my cat and didn't even realize it!!!!!!!!!!
I just had a bad feeling he wasn't getting better and decided at 4:30 on a Friday to take him to a different vet - never been there before, but they were open and close. Thank GOD I did! Turns out he was just a few hours away from death with the half-life in the meds I was giving him!!!!!!!!!!!
New vet treated him - took 2 weeks of round the clock care. Bad vet was closed down.
I now know the difference between vets that talk down to you because you are scared and worried about your pet and they think you are too stupid to know better and vets that take the time to guide you through it and make sure you completely understand your pet's health status.
