Fire ants

I love the south but fire ants are about to send me packing up north!

I'm able to ignore them pretty much everywhere but the backyard.  The dogs have gotten bitten and my garden is under siege, as am I each time I go to water and weed.

Has anyone found a good way to get rid of them that doesn't involve pesticides?

Fuuck TTC - I'm moving on.

Re: Fire ants

  • Don't resort to pesticides.  Pesticides are designed to kill any living creature they touch, they're not magically somehow only killing the fire ants.  You run the serious risk of poisoning your dogs, and yourself.  Since dogs lick themselves constantly, your dogs are going to get continous exposure every time you're in the yard.  You'll get a big dose all at once when you apply the pesticide.

Here in the Northeast our type of ants doesn't like it when it's wet, so I just water the crap our of their nests until they leave.  Alternatevely, cinnamon works extremely well.  You'll have to regularly apply it over a broad area, because it causes them to move and I bet they won't go far.  But this effort is worth preserving the health of your dogs and yourself.

  • I've used borax to get rid of ants in the house before and it worked well.

This is something really cool that I just found out.  We have a couple of HUGE ant hills on our property.  DH said that if you mix the ants up between the ant hills, they'll kill each other. So he took a shovel full from one hill and put it on the other and vice versa.  I was totally skeptical, but the next time I checked, the ants were gone.  That's one thing you could try if you have multiple ant hills (you didn't mention ant hills, just the ants, so I'm not sure if that's an option).

  • We've been using Orange Guard and its decent.  Sometimes they just move to a less annoying place in the yard so that good with me too.

I know!  I was sooo shocked that it worked.  I was seriously doubting DH, but the ants were gone a week later when I next checked.

  • Well THERE you are! I've missed you.

Try diatomaceous earth. It's pet/people friendly and ant-unfriendly.

I'm a board whore- I flit from board to board with nary a care.  Usually I'm over at Military Nesties though.

I'll look into the de and the orange stuff, thanks!

I tried the ant wars thing, I think they decided to join forces and populate the world with their own breed of super ant.  It's insane.

There is no danger of me using pesticides because I don't want the dogs getting into it (something were to happen to these two and I'd have to take to my bed) and my garden which we eat out of extensively is back there.

But I will triumph.  Victory will be mine.  Even if I have to go out there and use a magnifying glass on each one of those fuuckers.  Of course then I'm sure there would be enough left over to talk about the day the great lightening hit their world and I'd become stuff of legend to the point that one morning I'd wake up to find an angry mob of fire ants all hoisting pitchforks calling for my head.

Hmmmm, hopefully one of the other options will work out.
