Moving to Nashville

We just found out DH's company is moving us to Nasvhille.

I've been living in Indianapolis since 2008 -- I came here to be with my sister and she and her DH had their first baby.  This has been the first place that's been home since 2003.

I don't know anything about Nashville -- I've only been there once, for a day, for DH's interview.  The office he'll be at is by the airport, but I'm hoping to go to grad school at Vanderbilt or TSU... so I have no clue where we should live.

I feel totally overwhelmed!!!!!!!!  AHHHHHHHHHHHH!

But I do hear it's a great town, so I can relax... right?

Re: Moving to Nashville

  • Yes! Nashville is wonderful. We moved two years ago from Houston. Are you planning on renting or buying? That would definitely affect where you might live.

  • We will rent.  There isn't too much point in buying when we know we only be there a few years.  Plus we have to sell our home here.

kmays, you're a grad student, right?  Do you work, too?

I am a grad student. I work a student job at Vandy, around 10-20 hrs a week just for a little income. We rented a house our first year here in the 12South neighborhood. A lot of grad students I know rent out in Bellevue because its cheaper, but that would be quite a commute for your DH to the airport area. Another cheap option for you all would be the Antioch area. There are some nice apartment complexes there, even though the area itself isn't that nice and is going downhill. East Nashville is a very artsy, hip, progressive neighborhood with a lot of young couples and young families. And Hillsboro Village/Vandy-area and Green Hills are some of the nicest areas to live in close to town with malls, restaurants, coffee shops, etc.

  • Nothing to be worried about!  Nashville is an amazing town!  Just big enough, but not too big that you have to deal with big city issues on a large level.  We own a condo in Easthaven Townhomes and I would highly recommend trying to rent something in there if there are availabilities (they are managed by www.morrisproperty.com).  I'd offer ours to you but I have renters in until January.  It is only one exit from the airport on Lebanon Pike at Briley Pkwy and only 5 miles from downtown.  And that is a straight shot because 1st Ave in downtown turns into Lebanon Pike.   Good luck moving!
  • I just moved to nashville from south bend, IN a week ago! i've been very overwhelmed with the traffic. We're actually living in Antioch and most of the things we need are nearby...but I understand what your post said completely. I know one person here in town and its a girl I kinda knew in high school. We had completely different circles of friends but she has been amazingly nice and helpful! I am going to have to get my emission test for the 3rd time, which kinda sucks, but it happens. Since I haven't started my job yet, I've been trying to get my new apartment in order as much as possible....but so far, I like it a lot here!!

  • I absolutely love Nashville, and have been trying to convince DH to move there since my best friend moved there last year. I love the atmosphere, there's plenty to do, plenty of places to shop, and you can find some really nice areas to live in.

My BFF lives in Bellevue, but as pp said, that will be quite a drive if he will be headed to the airport area. I don't know of anywhere good in that area to live; there's not a lot out that way and it wouldn't be my first pick for a living area.

The traffic can be a little crazy if you're not used to big city traffic, but the good thing is, a lot of pockets of Nashville are their own little city, with grocery stores, restaurants, etc., so you can avoid the traffic most of the time.

     Good luck!

  • I'm actually getting excited about this.  It'll be an adventure!

Can someone tell where we DON'T want to live?  We can figure out how close/far we want to be, but I need to know where it is safe and not safe.  Are there perimeters or cross-streets we need to be away from/outside of?  In Indianapolis it's really easy, outside of the circle highway, and north of a certain street and you are safe.

    Thanks!

  • I went to Vandy for my undergrad so I've lived in a few places around West End and now I live out in Bellevue.  There are tons of apartments out here & I have to say I'm pretty partial to the West Nashville areas.  Traffic can be difficult at rush hour but Bellevue is only about 20-30 minutes from the airport area.
  • Definitely relax! Nashville is great. We moved here 2 1/2 years ago and while we don't plan on it long-term, we are loving it.

We've lived on West End (right down the street from Vandy), in Bellevue, and we're now very happy in Sylvan Park. West End was awesome, we loved living right down the street from so many great restaurants, parks, etc but we wanted to see if we could get more space so we moved to Bellevue. Pretty soon after the move, we figured out that was not the place for us!!! A little too far from everything (friends, work, things to do), so once our lease was up we migrated back toward West End. Now we're in Sylvan Park (a neighborhood off of West End/Murphy Rd) and we LOVE it.

When do ya'll make the move?
