What are you doing to keep your animals cool?

It's 101 outside and 83 inside today.  Yuck.  The poor dog, who is medium haired and black is having an awful time.  He's whiney and mopey and lethargic and refuses to do anything.  I can't say I blame hime.  I've got bowls of water in all kinds of places for him and have been giving him ice cubes to play with/eat.  He will not go into any kind of water, so I no pool or bathtub or lake or river will help.  The only thing he will do is play in the hose or sprinkler, but it's so hot I can't even get him to go outside into our shadeless backyard right now.

Any other ideas on ways to keep him comfortable?  We don't have AC or a  basement.  I'm tempted to ask our neighbor, who does have AC, if the dog can hang out there!

Re: What are you doing to keep your animals cool?

  • Our house stays pretty cool on its own, thankfully.   I just turned our air on because it hit 78 inside.  I have our ceiling fans on, and all of our shutters are closed so sunlight can't come in.

Can you take him to an air conditioned daycare?

Do you have a Kong?  I seal up the small end with peanut butter and freeze it, and then fill it up with chicken or beef broth and some random veggies and freeze the whole thing solid and give it to Nan.  Actually, anything frozen would work.  I also do hollow bones with apple sauce mixed with oats and some fruit.  Or a little bit of yogurt and fruit and veggies.

Would he be OK with getting a bath right now?  (ETA:  whoops!  sorry, missed that a bath is out)  Or with being misted with a spray bottle?  Both of those would freak Nan out, but some dogs are OK with it.  : )

  • Luckily our place keeps pretty cool as it doesnt' get direct sun and it's on the bottom floor.

Maybe a day or two of daycare since they'll have AC?

We have A/C, but sometimes Rambo gets frozen yogurt treats (plain yogurt + tuna).

  • I would also rec taking your dog to daycare.  Or just setting up a fan where he can lay in front of it.

  • Thanks guys!  We made it through with a water soaked towel and lots of ice cubes, as well as the fans.  During the hottest part of the day he and I siestaed in the bedroom.  Now that we have some shade in the backyard we're going to go outside and play with the hose.
