Mortgages

Has getting approved always been so impersonal?  I called our two banks today to make an appointment so we can ask questions, run some numbers, etc., and both said they can only answer questions over the phone.

Re: Mortgages

  • When I got mine (before I was even engaged) I just called the bank, said I found a house and it was this much and wanted to see if I could qualify, I never even heard a yes or no, it was just, "ok we need this info from your past years employers, ssn, etc. Up until the day I signed I never even heard an actual, "yes you are approved!" But also, I'm from a small town and this bank knows us and my family (business owners in town and my parents business account is at this bank) so I figured I would get approved, but I was on pins and needles until closing day!

  • We did everything over the phone or through email. We never once met our lender in person. So, yeah I guess it is pretty impersonal now.
  • I had a complete opposite experience.  We met with our lender at least 4 times face to face.  But we were also building a house and neither of us knew what we were suppose to be doing. LOL
  • Both times i never met with anyone.  Depends on the bank or mortgage company.  If you are going through a bank, they will probably want you to come in, if you are going through a mortgage broker, then frankly they don't give a rats butt.
  • Our situation may have been different since DH works for the bank but they met several times and she was at our closing as well... seems strange that they won't make an appt w/ you...!
  • I never met my lender but worked with a mortgage broker who met me face to face a couple of times. My loan was a little more complicated though since I had a standard loan plus a large construction loan.
  • We met with our lender 2-3 times prior to finalizing everything.  The lady we dealt with was very pleasant.  I think it depends on the bank and the people that work at that branch.
  • We met our lender at closing, but we did everything from Mexico during our wedding/honeymoon so everything was done via skype or email.

It seems weird that if you wanted to meet that they would do everything over the phone. I hate giving all my personal info out over the phone!

  • Well we talked to our two banks and both would do it over the phone.  I can understand ING a little better than the credit union Eric has been with for 27 years.

Instead we just applied to be prequalified from the bank he works for.  At least he'll have some sort of connection there in case he wanted to talk to someone face to face.

    Thanks for all the replies.

  • Wow, really? We met face-to-face with both lenders when we were trying to figure out who had better rates. I think we met twice with our mortgage lady and spoke on the phone several times.
