Cheap housewarming party ideas

I usually post on the bump but my bff just got her first aparment and another friend and I want to throw her really fun but cheap housewarming party. Im terrible with ideas and themes but my friend has had a hard year and deserves a kick a** party! The money thing is kind of an issue cuz I will be on maternity leave with no pay during this time plus I still want to get her an awesome gift.

TIA!

Re: Cheap housewarming party ideas

  • No themes, just some food and booze and a few friends is all you need.

Choose one or two drinks to serve, two or three different appetizers and one or two entrees - the amounts you get depends on the number of guests.

Not sure whether you want to do an afternoon thing or an evening thing but it only needs to be 3-4 hours long and to avoid having to serve a huge dinner do it between lunch (2-5 p.m.) and dinner or after dinner 7-10 p.m.).

  • When sending invitations put a room of the house on each one so that she won't get a ton of wind chimes and no dish towels for example.
  • I'd go for later in the evening on a weekday (even Friday), maybe from 7:30-10:30 or even 8:00-11:00. It's not really a "theme," but you could do something like "Sips & Sweets" -- just a few bottles of wine and some desserts. You could even do a signature drink named after your friend if you wanted to include a cocktail. For games, I'd just bring out classic board games -- Apples to Apples and Catch Phrase are both crowd pleasers, I've found. Plus, either or both of those would be a great/cheap housewarming gift to your friend, especially if she likes hosting game nights!

  • I would do wine and cheese party...have one white and one red....

do several kinds of cubed cheese, some simple fruit like grapes and strawberries, a baked brie, some brownies, crackers, bread, and a hot dip

  • I don't think you need to really have a set theme, unless your heart is set on that.My thoughts would be this:

Set the party time around 2pm-4pm that way its during during a 'meal time' so you can get away with serving light hors d'oeuvres and not have to supply a more abundant menu. I would do 1 signature cocktail...here in the south people love Firefly Sweet Tea vodka...mix that with iced tea and some lemonade and its a big hit. I would also serve food similar to this:

    Spinach dip with tortilla chips

    cheese and cracker spread

A small chicken item..maybe chicken tenderloin skewers or something

    mini brownies/cupcakes

    Good Luck!
