Favorite Farmer's Market

My husband and I went out this morning in search of the Clayton Farmer's Market, but had difficulty finding it. (That's what I get for not looking up the address!)  So instead, we trekked over to Soulard and WOW, that place is enormous (and packed!)

Anyone have any recs for their favorite Farmer's Market in the area?  What are your favorite parts about them?  The large selection?  The local produce?  The yummy snacks along the way?  Let me know!

Re: Favorite Farmer's Market

  • We used to always go to the Soulard one, but now we go to the Tower Grove. They have free yoga which is cool and it is smaller which makes it more intimate and you can talk to the farmers.  And they have these amazing breakfast tacos.  I've heard good about Maplewood and Kirkwood ones too.
  • St. Louis is blessed with really great farmer?s markets that are spread out during the week! I used to work on a farm as their farmer?s market person, so here is my opinion about the different locations.

Clayton- Saturday morning market located behind Straub?s parking lot. This market is pretty nice with some unique vendors. The only place I have seen Stinger?s honey and candles (some of the BEST honey you will ever taste and sold by the cutest old woman whose last name really is Stinger!). Blues Hog once sold BBQ here, but I heard that they aren?t there anymore. I don?t think there are any restrictions on specialty vendors, so you might see more service oriented or craft stands here. They also have music most weeks.

Maplewood ? Wednesday evening market held in the parking of Schlafly Bottleworks. AWESOME small market! The farmers here get free/discounted beer from Schlafly so they are typically in good spirits! All small producers from the area and no crafty or service vendors.

Tower Grove Park ? Saturday morning market held in the park near the Pool Pavilion. This market has EXPLODED in size and popularity! Can be difficult to walk around and browse because there are many people, dogs on leash, and strollers. But a lot of good vendors too! Delicious crepes and breakfast tacos and coffee to eat and drink. Most meat vendors I have seen at a market so you can get your locally raised free range chicken, lamb, goat, beef, bison? everything! Only on select weekends are craft and service vendors allowed to have a stand. Oh, and I just did the yoga for the first time this Saturday and it was SO peaceful.

Downtown- Tower Grove park also puts on the downtown Thursday evening market at the Old Post Office Pavilion. This is a brand new and still small market with live music. I think they just added beer service too. Cute market that everyone should give a try!

Soulard- This is the oldest and best established market in the area. It is also more ?commericial?. It runs Wednesday ? Saturday and is located in the Soulard Market place on 7th. There is a awesome collection of produce, crafts, services, spices, meat, food to go, everything you could need! The people watching is just incredible here. Unlike the other farmer?s markets, this one has various categories of how much produce is actually produced by a local farm. Some vendors are allowed to bring in outside produce (so you can get really cheap citrus fruit in Soulard!).

Sorry for the novel! I love farmers markets :)

  • Don't be sorry!  This has been VERY helpful! :)
  • I recently just discovered Soulard (after living in STL for a year!) It is amazing. I indulge in weekly flowers for myself; gorgeous and just $5. Also, excellent local meats and fresh baked breads. The best produce deals are on the "interior", the outer vendors jack up their prices.

Also, Vaccaro's in Saint Charles is a closer option that I use during the week. Kirkwood is bigger, but rather expensive. They do have excellent fresh fruit pies, though.
