Best places to live in PDX
So next year around this time DH and i are coming back to Oregon. I know a year is a long time, but i'm so ready to move back that i'm already looking for rental houses/apartments but i don't know where to start. I'm from albany so i dont know a lot about where to live in portland. I'll (hopefully) be going to lewis and clark college. Any suggestions?
Re: Best places to live in PDX
I've lived in the PDX area for almost 10 months now, and I asked the same question before I moved. I ended up in Suburbia (hillsboro/beaverton area), close to my work, but found that there are SO many neat areas in the greater Portland metro that it really depends on what you want, how much you can afford, etc. There's literally a ton of pocket neighborhoods, good/bad/mixed, etc. that it's really hard to say what is the "best". Before I moved, I heard Southeast Portland was bad, but there are some amazing neighborhoods tucked in that I would totally live in, so I guess it just depends.

anything but the pearl
...and the burbs unless you're into them. Do you like driving everywhere?
ahem. You do not have to drive everywhere if you live in the burbs. I live in Milwaukie and am half a mile from the 75 bus line, or about 2 miles from the Milwaukie transit center, or 3 miles from the Clackamas Town Center transit center and the MAX green line. I can also walk or bike to multiple grocery stores and restaurants.
That said, I live on the very north end of Milwaukie - like, just a couple blocks from the "welcome to Portland" sign - and would never live any further south because of the lack of public transport and walkability.
If you're going to LC and want to be close to that, definitely look in that area. It can be a really pretty area to live in, too. Otherwise, I'm an East side girl through and through and would highly recommend it. Like someone else said, it really depends on the type of neighborhood you're looking for, what kind of place you want, and how much you're willing to spend.
PS - Our rental will likely be available July 1 next year. Rental house, 2 bed 1 bath with a large yard, very north end of Milwaukie, just off Johnson Creek Blvd. If you guys decide you want to be in this area and are looking for a rental house, check with me then to see if it's available. It's about a 15 minute drive to LC. And yes, we do accept pets.
i do agree, depends on what you're looking for.
calm down. no need to get defensive.
I also live in Milwaukie (just outside of Sellwood, near McLoughlin). While I really really LOVE my specific neighborhood, I don't like that I have to get into my car to go anywhere. Sure, there's a few bus stops nearby, but there's not a grocery store or restaurants that I can walk to easily, and no parks within walking distance. I do really like that we are so close to downtown, the mall, the river, etc.
There are more walkable areas in Milwaukie, and I've found a great little area that's closer to Clackamas that we will probably buy our next house in, as it's closer to grocery stores and very walkable.
Personally, I love Beaverton and the West Side. I just think it's nicer, cleaner, safer than the East Side. Just my opinion, as I lived on the West Side for 23 years, and on the East Side for the last 5 years. Of course, there's pockets of good, and pockets of bad, all over town.
PS- Hi Bula! Where the heck have you been!
I know... i've totally missed out on the last gtgs! Horrible. I'm switching weekend schedules so I should be able to make it to some from here on out. In-laws coming for a week this wednesday- cleaning. Are you still going to 24Hour Fitness on mcloughlin?
To me, Gresham does feel a lot unsafer than other areas but I wouldn't put all areas of SE together under that. There are lots of quiet safe neighborhoods in SE. We lived in Creston-Kenilworth and could walk to Safeway and TJ's and I always felt safe there. The Belmont, Hawthorne, Mt. Tabor areas are also really nice. Sellwood is great though a little bit more expensive.
SW Portland also has some great rentals in Goose Hollow, NW Portland, Homestead. It would probably be more practical to live on the West side if you are going to L&C. Tigard has some easy access as well. We live close to Washington Square now and are close to the Fred Meyer on 99 and Costco.
