Today while painting I noticed "stuff" hanging out of the vent in the stairwell. I made DH get a ladder and check it out, and from what he was able to know down it looks like insulation. I know we've got fiberglass insulation in the attic, although this was brown, not pink, so not sure if they mixed types or it's dirty or what. I went around and checked the other vents and found a couple more with the same stuff - upstairs only since we haven't run the AC downstairs. I guess we're going to hire someone to come out and check the system for damage and clean everything out since neither of us is big on the idea of inhaling fiberglass particles. The AC is off til we get someone out here - DH is whining already so we'll have to make it soon
So, that got us talking - maybe we should at some point replace the fiberglass with something safer - I'm thinking cellulose. Are their other safe options we should consider? Anyone had theirs replaced that could tell me what type of cost we'd be looking at (obviously differs, but just in general)?
Re: Let's talk insulation
I would go with spray foam insulation. When we finish our basement that is what we are doing.
You will have to have someone come and do it for you so that will up the cost for a bit but you aren't going to have to replace it or top it up so that is a 'pro'.
We had insulation added to our attic last fall. It was a soy-based spray foam product. http://www.biobased.net/
