Apostle Island National Park?

We're thinking of camping here. Any experience with it? Travel tips? There are so many islands to choose from! It looks gorgeous though.

Re: Apostle Island National Park?

  • Sorry this isn't exactly what you are looking for but since you seem to still be mulling things over I'll give you my 2 cents.  My dh and I spent 4 days on Madeline Island and stayed at Big Bay State Park.  There is a ferry to take you to the island ($50 round trip for 2 people and 1 truck).  The state park is large and has 1.5 miles of sand beach in the bay.  The water is clear and the beach is great for wading (some people swim- but for me it is too cold) and rock picking.  There are about 9 miles of trails in the state park with gorgeous views.  The campsites are great.  I would choose a pull in site rather than the walk-to sites.  We spent 1 night in a walk-to site and it rained- it was a swamp back there.  There are showers and flush toilets in one loop of the campsites and pit toilets in the rest.  Lots of wildlife- we saw tons of chipmunks and deer.  There are bear on the island but we didn't see any and the rangers said that they aren't a nuisence.  There is a town on the island called La Point.  Eat at the Beach Club for great fish fry.  The bar is really pretty.  You can rent mopeds and see the island that way- we did it and it was really fun.  There are also boat tours and a golf course for other things to do.  There is a gas station on the island and a grocery store.  But get anything you think you would need in Ashland (there are a ton of stores there and a Wal-Mart) because on the island they may not have it and if they do it would cost tons more.  Hope this helps some.
