What kind of flower is this (purple)?

I love these flowers... I see them everyday near where I live, but I have no clue what kind they are.... does anyone else know? Thanks!!!

  • Russian Sage.  I have one growing in some very poor soil on the edge of my driveway and it gets taller than me every summer.  Each fall after the leaves die I trim it back to about a foot tall.  I love the way they look and smell.  One word of caution, you will smell like them if you crush leaves while working on the plant.

  • I have some Russian Sage in our flower garden, but I just have a few tall strands, not the pretty bushy plants in the pic.  Any idea how to get mine to grow more full other than just time?  I've never touched them after planting a couple of years ago.
