Day Trips

We are relatively new to St. Louis and are looking for somewhere to explore for the day. Any cute little towns, hiking places that are within 2 hours of St. Louis? I really wish there was a beach where we could go and have our pup explore water, but am not finding much of anything here.  The only one I know of is Hannibal and I'd like to visit there but I like options!

Re: Day Trips

  • Johnson Shut Ins for hiking, water, and zip lining.  SO much fun.

My favorite wineries are in Defiance and especially in St. Genevieve (the have some cute bed and breakfasts that will transoport you to the wineries and brewery in St. Gen too... email me if you want info, for we go there a lot).

I am drawing a blank on other things, but I am sure I will think of more.

  • Hermann has some excellent wineries and B&Bs are well.  And there's always the Katy Trail, a bike trail running from St. Charles to... infinity and beyond!  (Or at last really far!)  I also recommend Lake of the Ozarks (might be a bit further than you wish, though.)
  • Ooo, one more!  Pere Marquette State Park in Illinois!
  • I think it would be cool to go to Cahokia and see the mounds.  Granted, I've never been there, but I see the exit for it on the highway when I go to Chicago.  Some neat American Indian history right over the boarder!
    Love my family!

Ha ha... always forget about those mounds.  If you like a bit of history I would say it would be pretty neat.  I used to get there all the time for elementary school, but you could make a trip to them and then drive south to Alto Pass Trail (cute wineries and great wine).  Can you tell I like wine?

    Ditto, ditto, ditto!!

I'm not a regular poster here, but I saw this and HAD to recommend driving the Great River Road up to Grafton.  It is a cute town right on the river with lots of shops, wineries/breweries, and B&B's.  Also, on the way up you can stop in Elsah, IL and check out that adorable little town.  And like pp suggested, Pere Marquette State Park is very nice.  Lots of trails for your pup, camping if you're interested, and they have a restaurant as well.  Have fun!

  • Ooooh thank you ladies! I'm so excited to do some exploring now! Will let you know where we head out to!
  • DH and I love our wines so we like to take winery trips.  My favorite is Ste. Genevive because there is this great little winery/microbrewery that we love.

  • I highly recommend the Washington, MO area. Downtown has a lot of neat little shops and restaurants and there's a nice trail down by the riverfront. At night Front Street (which is the last one before the river) comes alive as the bars and pubs open and the people come out. And Augusta is only a hop across the river and they have some great wineries!

Also, Meramec State Park is a pretty little area. The visitor center has a nice, short little exhibit and show that is to the point, and there's tons to do, with many trails and caves to explore if you're a nature-y person. They also added a zip-line adventure this past year that I want to go check out soon!

Missouri is a beautiful state, and has so much to offer! Enjoy your trips, and post pics!! Big Smile

  • We went to the Shut-in's and they did not allow dog's in the area we visited. Not far away is the Pink Elephant State Park which is dog friendly and also has a nice little picnic area!

  • ditto elephant rock - but i'd say skip cahokia mounds.  unless you really like stair-climbing!
