i need a plant recommendation too

i'm looking for an evergreen plant that has flowering blooms (doesn't matter what season) for on either side of my front door. i'd perfer a red or yellow color but at this point i can get over that. i need it to stay fairly small b/c i have some ferns that will be behind it. i live in Pennsylvania so i need it to be hardy. thanks for any suggestions.

  • gumpo azaleas?  I don't think they come in red or yellow but they do come in pink.  they are a smaller azalea & if you have ferns growing there, then I assume the spot isn't in full sun all day.

if you want evergreen, it's going to need to be some kind of shrub i think & it will be difficult to find something small enough that also flowers that you can see the ferns behind it.

Have you considered moving the ferns to the front & putting a shrub in the back?

  • What zone are you in?  How much shade does the area get?

Rhododendron (aka Azaleas) sound like a good choice but be careful only certain types are evergreen.  And in cooler climates evergreen rhododendrons actually have copper colored leaves in the fall/winter so they are not necessarily green.

Holly could be a good choice.  It has small white flowers and red berries.  It's dark waxy leaves stay green all year long but it can prick you.

How much sun is there? How big a plant do you want?

  • It is mostly shade with some afternoon sun.

A coworker suggested Hellabeaurs (sp) ... anyone know anything about them?

Oh, this would be a good suggestion, but they like more shade.  They could probably deal w/ morning sun, but afternoon sun would be too hot.

Are you really wedded to having the ferns in the back?  You'll have a *lot* more options if you move the ferns to the back.

  • Hi there - what about cape honeysuckle?

Cape Honeysuckle is not hardy OR small.

Hellebores would be good, or Gaultheria. And my hellebores have proven to be remarkably tolerant of afternoon sun exposure.

  • The more photos I see online of the hellebores the more I like them. I don't think the afternoon sun is a huge concern b/c it s limited sun since we have 3 mature maple trees that will still provide shade during the afternoon. Thanks gals.
