New laptop (PC) recommendations?

Hello! My husband and I desperately need a new laptop!  I have a Mac (desktop), but his work apps only run on PC.  The last laptop we bought was almost 10 years ago, so needless to say, I need help.  I'd like to take advantage of the tax free weekend coming up in a couple weeks.

The majority of what we'll use the laptop for is the internet, pictures and *some* gaming (husband).  I like the laptops with the 10 key keypads, too!  Other than that, we don't need a lot of frills and would like to keep it affordable.

Any recommendations?  I'm sure any basic laptop would do, but we'd like to make sure we pic a reliable brand with something that is fast and has good storage and one that will last us.  Not sure what the good processors, etc, are out right now.

Thank you all!!!

Re: New laptop (PC) recommendations?

  • Most basic laptops seem to be between 250 and 500 dollars.  The least expensive I've found I believe at Best Buy is around 275 but as far as I can tell not much for gaming.  Personally I'd budget around 600 bucks for a laptop that is of decent size and capabilities.

  • If you'd prefer not to shell out $600 for a new laptop just so you can run your husband's work apps, then I'd just use Apple Boot Camp to partition your current iMac drive and get a copy of Windows from ebay for cheap and run it on your current computer.

I agree with PP that around $600 is enough for an adequate laptop.  You may also consider just getting a separate 10-key pad accessory instead of a laptop that has that built in as you may find it more cost effective this way.

  • To save on costs, but also have a computer that can handle a little bit of gaming I would go fo refurbished. Acers are pretty good and they have one of the highest rated customer service.
  • Also, remember that big gaming laptop will come with big heat, so make sure you get a chill pad.
