Watermelon Problem

I noticed the other day that there is a split in the rind of my watermelon on the side that is on the ground.  Do I just wait until it is ready and eat it like I would if it wasn't there?  Do I let it keep growing and not eat it?  Do I clip it off so that the plant can direct its energy into the other smaller watermelon?

I would pick it and cut it open and see if it is okay to eat. I haven't ever had this happen with my watermelons though. I would figure that if you left it it will just rot, so why not pick it now and see if it is salvageable and let the plant concentrate on growing the other fruit!
