possibility of packet seeds being weeds?

Maybe a crazy question but is there a chance that the packs of seeds I bought were nothing but weeds?

I did container plantings, all from seed packets, this spring. So far, every container has grown various weeds (purslane, lambsquarter & foxtail grass among others that I can't identify).  The only things that came up as actual plants/flowers were some gladiolus.  Also, these are weeds I've never seen in my yard and the way they grew up in the containers was in a deliberate pattern, as if they were intentionally planted that way.

WTH?  I mean, I'm not great at gardening but this is ridiculous even for me. The containers were bought brand new & potting soil put in them just this spring.

Talk about feeling like a gardening failure!! Hmm

Re: possibility of packet seeds being weeds?

  • You can definitely NOT get what the seed packet says it contains.

I bought Chinese Lantern seeds and started them indoors.  I transferred them outside when they were about  8 inches high.  They bloomed last week.  They weren't Chinese Lanterns.  I have no idea what they are.

  • This explains what is happening in all my containers as well.
  • Weeds are just the term for plants that don't have any medicinal, or flowery use :)

But that being said, if the packet of seeds wasn't machine packed, then it's human error :(
