dog question!

sooo my husband and i just adopted a ten month old staffordshire/lab mix (we think) puppy from the east valley shelter on sunday! she had to get spayed before we picked her up yesterday. she is my first dog, so i don't know what to expect after this type of surgery. is it normal for her to be super lethargic the day after? i don't want to be a spaz and go calling the vet for nothing, but i also don't want to miss something important.

 any advice?

Re: dog question!

  • My puppy is getting spayed today. The dog will be tired from the anesthesia and it is highly likely you will also be able to get sedatives. With an energetic puppy, you will want to keep her quiet and calm until the wound is healed and the stitches are out. You don't want her pulling the stitches apart and the sedative will help. If the dog doesn't have sedatives but is acting very slow the next day, I'd suggest calling the vet for that. She should feel back to normal fairly quickly, which is why sedatives help.
  • She may be a little out of it the day after. Just make sure she doesn't lick her wound. After a few days she will be herself.

Make sure to post some pictures when you have a chance. Have you chosen a name? I love animals and dogs in particular.

  • thanks for the advice! her name is maddie and she is a real sweetheart. she started perking up considerably last night so it looks like all is well :)
  • That's great, glad to hear she's doing well.

  • Sounds like she's good! My puppy is home and relaxing. Smile
  • Hi! Congrats on becoming a new dog mommy! I have four dogs myself, three girls. It is perfectly normal for her to be lethargic the day after, maybe even a couple of days. She's probably uncomfortable and won't play around too much. In a week, she should be good to run around. Just don't let her pick at the stitches. It's normal for the area to be a little red the first couple of days too. If after a few days, it's really red and sore to your touch, then call the vet. But, normally, they heal quickly and easily. Good luck!

  • Our puppy was spayed about a month or so ago and the first day she was a little lethargic and the cone took some getting use to.  But the day after she was back to her normal self and it was hard keeping her from jumping around too much.  The whole experience went pretty well!
