Questions about appliances

So, as we are hopefully coming to a "yes" from the bank on this house and I've been thinking about appliances.

It currently has GROSS (and I mean groooooss) white appliances which we will either sell, giveaway, something...

We originally wanted SS but I've heard people say not to with kids because their fingerprints show up a lot more than if we had black.

I can go with either. I do think SS looks a little nicer but black isn't bad either.

Can you tell me your opinions on what you would get with kids coming into the picture someday. Or if you already have kids, what do you have and do you wish you had something else?

Re: Questions about appliances

  • I know I don't have kiddos, but I do have SS appliances.  Even w/o kids running around, the appliances still get filthy.

I hate seeing the fingerprints, it just looks so gross.  I HAVE to clean the appliances weekly or it they look disgusting.  I would imagine that having kids would only amplify the fingerprints and that cleaning would increase to daily or multiple times per week.

ETA:  If you have a handheld steamer, cleaning is quick and easy (we have The Shark).

  • We plan on getting stainless steel! Wink If you are really worried about fingerprints, you can get a brushed finished.   And YEAH on the house!

(DH didn't tell me until late last night when he was working on the computer that the bank requested our proof of funds, so I am hoping that means they are seriously considering our offer!!)

Fingers crossed for both of us!

  • If we didn't have SS I would choose black appliances.

That being said, I love our SS.  Our fridge is a brushed finish though and I never notice it getting gross.  I wipe down our oven/dishwasher and micro every couple of days though to keep away smudges.  It's not that bad :)

YAY on that!!! Our bank just asked for an updated LSR on Monday so I thought we'd hear by now. I seriously don't understand their hold up. They now have ALL the paperwork if we had a yes so WTF is their issue. UGH!

  • I would do black, personally, I love the look of stainless steel but my MIL just got them in her brand spanking newly remodeled kitchen, which I am in no (all) way(s) jealous of.

And she hates how dirty they get so quickly.

With my having a rugrat and hopefully more in the future.

I'd get black, then adjust paint colors accordingly.

  • I love the look of the brushed SS. because like pp have said it is easier to keep clean.  I have boring white appliances, but when we buy a house we want either black or ss, you know depending on the style of the home =)

  • we have stainless appliances and i do notice they get dirty very quickly. water spots are the big one on the dishwasher and the stove from the hand towel hanging there. i always have a hard time cleaning it without getting streaks too, no matter what i use. i love the look but i kind of wish we would have gotten black appliances.

if you do end up getting stainless, make sure you get the synthetic stainless on the fridge so you can put magnets on the front (unless you don't want magnets, but real stainless doesn't work with magnets)

You can use it on practically anything, I kid you not (lol).  There are a bunch of different attachments for the various surfaces/materials.

So far we've done our curtains, countertops, SS, inside of the oven and micro, windows, hmmm....that might be it.  But its also pictured cleaning showers and all sorts of goodies.

We also have the floor steamer, b/c our nasty tile refuses to come clean in our lovely construction zone.

  • I would absolutely get black.  We have SS now and I hate that they get dirty and it's SO noticeable.  This happened even before we had my son touching everything!  I love the look of the SS when they are clean but I hate that it shows EVERYTHING!!
  • I'm one of the abnormal people who likes white appliances, haha. If I didn't have white, I'd probably go for black, although I think white looks best in my kitchen. I've never been a big fan of SS... not sure why. It just looks sort of "commercial" to me, but I know I'm in the minority on that.
  • SS is pretty, but not practical with the kiddos. It gets very messy easily and  in my opinion, it's just not worth it.  My mom has SS and her appliances get really gross when my kids are visiting.  lol. It's a good thing she LOVES my kids. haha!

And if they got mine all nasty, I would still love them too because well, they are my neice and nephew and sooooooo damn cute! hehe

  • I wouldn't get SS. We are working on replacing all of our SS appliances with black because even the brushed SS shows itty bitty paw prints like you wouldn't believe.

I just scrubbed my fridge down (for the 3rd time today) otherwise I'd show you how quickly 2 sets of little hands dirty it up. It's impossible to keep SS looking good if you have a couple of kids around.

  • If I could have anything I'd get either a cabinet front fridge and this

    http://www.thekitchendesigner.org/storage/Bertazzoni.jpg

or all retro red appliances like this

    http://www.appliance411.com/purchase/retro.shtml

We have a cabinet front dishwasher now and almond-blech appliances.  We can't replace for.a.way.long.time.  I don't mind either ss or black...

Stac--what style of decorating style do you think you are?

ps--shan--tell me how to make 'em clicky again?

  • There are some nicer SS ones that have a treatment on them, rather than a SS look alike. Look at LG or Samsung, they're usually pretty nice looking even for SS look alikes.

I personally have black appliances and I love them! They look really good with our cherry cabinets and tanish tile/counters. I love my kitchen, basiclaly. Stick out tongue

Good luck with the house Big Smile

Oh man, I want red appliances sooooo badly! Or charcoal grey, like Alton Brown's kitchen on food network. Or turquoise.

  • Our house came with white appliances, they were brand new (it was a model) and we like them.

MY FAVORITE thing ever in our house- my cherry red dryer!  Best ever!  If I could have all red appliances, I would.
