New to Phoenix!!

Hey all!! I'm brand new to Phoenix (I just moved here last week). My fiance went to undergrad at ASU and loved it! We decided to move here from Chicago for better job opportunities. We live on the east side of Phoenix, almost in Scottsdale and I was just looking for advise on fun things to do in the area, festivals, good restaurants, nightlife, etc.

Sorry, I don't have many Scottsdale rec's for you as I live in Tempe but I'm sure someone can help you out.

  • Welcome to Arizona!

Summer is pretty much a dead time since it's so hot around these parts!

  • Welcome to the board!  I live in Fountain Thrills, Scottsdale's neighbor to the east  Wink

Hmmm fun stuff to do in the valley:

Water parks (Sun Splash and Wet & Wild)

    Saguaro Lake

Tubing (its a filthy river, but everyone should do it at least once)

    Outdoor malls

If you're interested in night life, Old Town Scottsdale and Mill Ave. are popular

AZ State Fair rolls around in the fall

I'll ETA as I think of more stuff...

  • Welcome! The good thing about moving to Phoenix in July is that if you can survive the heat, the payoff of 60-degree winters is AMAZING.  ;) All your Chicago friends/family will be calling you incessantly to complain about the snow. I'm from Cleveland have been here for 6 years, and I'm still the first one they complain to about the cold and snow.  ;)

If you haven't yet, take a drive up South Mountain. It's right off central, south of downtown, and it's a mountain that you can literally drive up. It's such a cool view at the top, and it's like you hiked only you didn't have to sweat at all, which is perfect this time of year! It'll be a good place to take all the visitors you're sure to get.

Other year-round things I love about AZ: hiking (we have some GREAT trails, if you're into that), spring training in Feb/March, local sports teams, symphony, herberger theater, the desert botanical garden (the luminarias event around the holidays is my favorite), etc. Now isn't a great time for outdoorsy stuff, but you can always take a drive up to Flagstaff to cool off.  ;)

Hope you can make it to the GTG in a couple of weeks!

  • I just realized you asked for restaurant recs...  Here are my faves:

Pita Jungle (all over the valley)

    Bandera (Old Town Scottsdale)

Busters (Scottsdale) - try the lavash!

    El Torito (Scottsdale)

Palm Court at the Scottsdale Resort & Conference Center (Scottsdale) - the most amazing brunch I've been to, besides the Hotel Del Coronado in CA
