Odd question- hanging something on metal?
Over our stove is our microwave and a cabinet. On one side there are more cabinets, on the other it's an open bar. The side that's open is ugly and I want to cover it with a spice rack. If I could hang it on the side of the microwave, then that would be easier to reach and would look a little better.
But how would I hang it there since it's metal? Nestie geniuses, help!
Here is a pic of the area- please excuse the boxes, it was from when we first moved. And sorry there are two of the same. I don't know why I have such a hard time with PIP.

Re: Odd question- hanging something on metal?
What about those magnetic little spice tins from Ikea? You could also do some type of mount where you attach a rack to the bottom of the cabinet so that it hangs in front of the microwave. Ikea has a lot of different options that would let you cabinet-mount that would utilize the microwave space.

Thanks for the idea FCB, but I really wanted a rack. I've seen those before but didn't want to transfer everything to new containers. I know that's probably silly, but I've searched everywhere for a rack that would work.
I actually had one ordered and built from someone on Etsy and it was such a freaking disaster. I'm now hesitant to order from Etsy because they won't help at all. It wasn't even similar in quality to the one posted and the dimensions were wrong so it wouldn't fit! Plus, it took 2 months and many many emails to get it! Can't tell you how angry it made me.
Gwynnetx, maybe I'll have to look at plywood and what that would look like... Good idea!
I would think you could buy some strong magnets and affix them to the back of the spice rack, then just use magnets to hold the rack against the microwave.
Or strong adhesive squares to hold it on.

Did you click the link? I was referencing the rack that would hang down in front of the microwave. Or would your containers not fit in there?
Strong magnets are cheap and easy to find at Home Depot and Lowes. Near the nuts/bolts/screws usually.
Is there a concern with having spices near a heat source? I don't know if hanging them on the side of the microwave might harm the spices.
ditto the magnets. I googled and found this, it looks pretty cool! I know you said you didn't want to put stuff in new containers, but I think it would look better if it was all uniformed if you are going to display them.

Sorry FCB! I didn't click, I was thinking it was this:

or something like this:

I like those from Ikea that you posted, but already bought wooden ones.
I thought about the heat, but decided that I didn't care that much. I'd be more concerned because it's close to the stove, but there aren't many other options for places.
And of course, now the more I look at this, the more I like it and question if it's what I should do and if I'm stupid for wanting to keep them in their original jars.
Sigh.
love this. but you could easily DIY - just buy some magnetic strips (don't ask me where, but I'm thinking home depot or hobby lobby) and attach to the lid of small jars.
ETA: just curious as to why you want to keep everything in the store bought jar - do you think it will be a PITA to change it to another container?
I don't know why, I think because I feel it's just one more expense (although I know it's only the initial expense) and feels wasteful to throw the containers away (although I know they will get thrown away/recycled eventually). I think it might also be a familiar/comfort thing- that's what my mom had growing up and since then I've been in cramped apartment kitchens with no space for a spice rack.
However, I may end up changing my mind eventually since they will be out and very prominent in the rack. It would look prettier if they were all simple glass jars.
I'll have to post when I break down and buy the matching jars. I'm sure it's only a matter of time now...
the great thing about having little containers is you can buy your spices in bulk (I think whole foods/central market do this) - I believe it's actually cheaper because spices don't last that long to begin with (a year-ish) so you can buy a little at a time.
says the girl who has never done this but has always been meaning to do this.
