Back in 2000 when my parents divorced my Dad racked his credit cards up and never paid on them
10 years later...(yes 10 years)...he is finally starting to get back on track and wants to fix his credit.
I helped him pull up his credit report and there are about 7 different negative items. Some are listed from 2000 and some are listed in 2005, even though all the damage was done back in 2000 and 2001.
Will the credit bureaus still take it off his credit even though it says 2005?
We filed disputes on all the items, but would like to get more info...
Re: Fixing credit-
The credit bureaus MUST go by the ORIGINAL date of delinquency, which in your dad's case seems to be 2000-2001. Sounds like you get can ALL the negatives off. The original creditor's often 'sell' the account to a NEW creditor and that's where you get the listing like the 2005. It's to try to make people THINK it'll still be on (for instance, they sell it again, and now it says 2010!), but the 7-yr-on-your-credit-report applies to the original date.
If you don't get anything back from the items within a few weeks, I would send letters to all asking the items to be removed, as the 7 years statute of limitations has expired. You have to mention each account separately. Also, don't know if you did this, but please be sure to check all 3 credit reports! They often have different items on them and you want to make sure ALL will be taken off all 3!
Before we got our house, my husband's credit (we weren't married yet) was SHIIIIT!!! He had ER med bills from before his asthma was under control. So I researched, learned a crapload of stuff, and got very good at "what to do" with credit items and settled items, etc, etc. That's where my knowledge base comes from. Good luck! Sounds like an easy fix for him!
Thank you for all the info!!!!!
I have never had to deal with anything like this before, so I was clueless while trying to help my Dad.
All I knew was to pull his credit reports, and then I researched what to do from there.

Yes, he is trying to buy a house.
If you can give me the info I would appreciate it. It is going to be about a year before he is ready to purchase a house...if that matters...
