In Cincinnati all of our veggies are now really producing well. This week our tomoatoes are finally ripening and the eggplants are ready to pick! I am curious what everyone else grows and what is doing well for you. I am always thinking about what new veggies I want to try next year!
Re: What are you growing?
Ready to eat:
raspberries
lettuce
cilantro
dill
Almost ready:
potatoes
snow peas
basil
Still trying:
carrots
peas
a couple kinds of tomatoes
green beans
scarlet runner beans
Probably not going to make it (too wet this year):
butternut squash
cucumbers
And we just transplanted some strawberries yesterday. I'll be surprised if they produce this year.
I have two SFG boxes as well as potted herbs. Everything is doing pretty well this year.
Tomatos are starting to ripen, and hot peppers are growing as well. Still waiting for the eggplant and bell peppers. I'm not sure what they're waiting for! I have four eggplant plants, and they haven't even had so much as a flower yet.
The herbs are doing really well. They're new to the garden this year, and I'm so happy I planted them. It's so nice to add some spice to dinner by just walking right out to the patio to pick them.
My early plants gave nice, instant satisfaction: radishes, lettuce, spinach and sugar peas. I think I'll replant the lettuce and spinach after some of the heat subsides.
Eating: Lettuce (near the end), Spaghetti Squash, Yellow Squash, Zucchini, Cucumbers, Beans, Basil, cilantro, parsley, tarragon, (and already ate broccoli)
Soon: Tomatoes, Carrots, Cantaloupe, Watermelon, Jalepenos, Sweet peppers (a few kinds), Leeks
Failed: Peas, Eggplant, Onions
Peas are almost done. Lettuce has bolted.
herbs in pots are doing well.
Tomatoes are green but coming in - plants themselves have formed a jungle.
Okra - two pods coming nicely.
Peppers - teeny ones coming on
Cucumber & melon - lots of flowers, vine growing everywhere.
Hops - HUGE.
Nothing exciting:
Zucchini (ready to eat)
Cucumbers (ready to eat)
Lettuce (ready)
Still waiting
Tomatoes (need to plan earlier from seeds)
Peppers
It's our first garden. We started small, but have been successful.
Eaten ~6 zucchini, 2 tomatoes; herbs are doing great except for shaded out oregeno (my bad)
Looks like we'll have a good crop of tomatoes very soon.
Eggplant and acorn squash just sprouted fruit this week. We've had a bell pepper started for awhile. Does each pepper plant only produce one? Also doing fine, but not ready- carrots, onions, potatoes, and sweet potatoes.
Next time, we want to plant lettuce, beans, and broccoli as well. Oh, and we'll plant kale later this year (soon?)
We're having a slow start to summer, even for Seattle. I think I may plant some more herbs.
Right now I have:
11 tomato plants
3 blueberry bushes
4 spinach
a bunch of lettuce varieties
6 green bean plants
4 basil
2 lemon basil
1 lonely parsley
1 cilantro
We have two 6x3 beds and several pots.
Already harvested:
Spinach
Sugar Snap Peas
English Peas
Bush Beans
Ready now:
Swiss chard
the early variety of tomatoes (Roma and cherry)
Jalapenos
Herbs (mint, oregano, thyme, basil, parsley, rosemary)
Cucumbers
Ready soon:
Sweet peppers
Slicing and paste tomatoes
Carrots
Onions
Planting in the fall
More swiss chard
Kale
Beets
Won't produce for a few years
Blueberries
Died
Potatoes -> infested by ants
Eggplant -> devoured instantly by flea beetles
It's our first year too. Our pepper plants have 2-3 small pepper per plant. I read that peppers benefit from constant weak fertilizer, so we do compost tea every time we water. Alternatevely you could do half-strength organic fertilizer. A couple of peppers have blossom end rot though
This has been a great summer for vegis. Lots of hot sunny days and enough rain.
already harvested:3 kinds of lettuce, spinach, basil, catnip, mint, chives
harvesting now: cucumbers, carrots, a second round of spring mix lettuce, potatoes, rosemary, parsley, zuchini
soon: tomatoes, peppers, pole beans, onions, leaks, eggplant
giant fail: my broccoli turned into flowers while we were on vacation in June
in a couple years: planted raspberries, grapes and a plum tree this year
Eaten- peas, beans, lettuce, and herbs. Next year we need to plant more peas and beans I thought we'd have too many, but we never got enough for a full serving.
Harvesting- carrots-I think I chose a bad variety they are really short. My herbs are growing really well I need to figure out how to dry sage.
Coming soon- we have so many tomatoes! They are everywhere we planted too many, but it's a learning curve. Summer squash and zucchini both plants are very large and growing like crazy. Potatoes, peppers, broccoli, leeks, shallots, green onions, and watermelon.
This year my garden has been a giant SUCK fest.
We didn't plant corn this year because what we did plant last year ended up getting eaten.....but boy, do I regret not planting corn now because instead the deer, fox, bunnies, etc etc have been eating other plants instead. Next year, we plant corn again. Don't worry, I'll make sure it's non-GMO corn, even if we aren't consuming it.
Failure:
Eggplant, Broccoli, Oregano, Dill, Parsley, Basil (twice--third time has been the charm, thankfully), Zinnias, Sunflowers (again, I'm on my third planting and MIGHT have 2-4 new sprouts out of a dozen seeds), Alyssum
Successes (so far):
Snap Peas, Lettuce, Asparagus, Blueberries (we don't eat these--we keep our bushes for the birds and animals), Raspberries (bird/animal food)
Looking forward to:
Tomatoes, Peppers (when are these going to make FRUIT??), we do have a few cukes growing (not where we planted them, of course), Watermelon (first fruit spotted this morning!!), and Honeydew (tons of flowers, no fruit yet)
Will replant for a fall/winter crop:
Lettuces (I eat a lot of salad), Peas, Broccoli, eggplant, parsley and I might try Kale for the first time. I've never even eaten Kale, so it should be interesting.
Already harvested: spinach, lettuce, peas (good, but many were too big adn bitter)
Ready now: zucchini (trying to produce before the vine borers completely kill my plants) yellow summer squash (again, vine borers) cucumbers, bush and pole beans
Not quite ready but doing well: tomatoes, potatoes, beets, carrots, jalapenos, my million other types of peppers, pumpkins, garlic, onions, watermelon, and cantelope
Planting now for fall harvest: spinach, carrots, beets, zucchini, squash
Next year hopefully my asparagus will be ready.
Done:
Peas & Spinach (although the bugs ate most of the spinach and the 2nd round I planted never came up) Oh, and radishes, but I learned that I just don't like radishes.
Ready now:
Raspberries
Blueberries (kind of - we just planted them in May and we have picked about 10 of them and I doubt we will get much more than that)
Beans - I just picked our first bowl full today!
Kale - My DD asks for "yummy kale" when we go out to the garden
Still growing:
tomatoes (lots and lots - 4 varieties),
beets,
onions,
red and yellow bell peppers,
corn,
2nd round of peas,
Zucchini
We also had plans on planting a few varieties of squash, cucumbers and pumpkins but just never got around to it. We want to try potatoes and carrots next year. I had my first fresh from the garden carrot from my mom's garden, yum!
Other
Ready:
Leaf lettuce and Red romaine, both on their way to bolting
Bush beans
Zucchini (have picked 5; 3 more on the way)
Banana peppers, one jalapeno pepper
On the Way:
Pumpkins- orange and white
Butternut squash
Bell peppers
More jalapenos
More beans
Carrots & Dragon carrots
I guess I could answer my own question
Already harvested: lettuces and spinach
Harvesting: Cherry tomatoes, summer squash, eggplant, basil, rosemary, sage, chives, french and lemon thyme.
Waiting on: remaining tomato varieties, garlic, onions, carrotts
Failure: Zucchini(powdery mildew)
My Blog
What we've been eating:
Swiss chard
Arugula
Mustard greens
Tall curry
Chives
Rosemary
Radishes
Almost ready to use:
Tomatoes
Okra
Pumpkins (okay, not almost, but they are growing like crazy and will be ready for the fall, obviously)
Growing, but unsure:
Beans
Squash
Eggplant
Carrots
Collard greens
Failed:
Spinach
Lavender, basil, cilantro, four types of tomatoes, jalape?o, corn, beans (or peas...hmm...I don't remember which I planted where and I'm pretty sure one of the two plots is not growing), carrots, radishes, broccoli, and cucumber.
And I just finished cutting back the lettuce and spinach failure. Neither got full like they was ready to be picked, and then they just shot up and flowered. I tried the lettuce and it was too bitter to eat.
Not too much, this is my first foray into gardening
red basil
italian parsley
onions
spinach
I tried lettuce, but it stopped growing shortly after sprouting, although the sprouts still seem alive. I'm not sure what happened. My mom planted her lettuce a couple weeks after I did, same climate, and she's eating hers already.
I'm thinking about starting some strawberries
side note: I discovered the secret to getting your two year old to eat leafy greens: grow your own! My spinach was growing beautifully and my son razed the patch tonight, stuffing it all in his mouth. I've already planted more to replace it.
Ready to eat or already done:
Some jalapenos, lemon peppers (hybrid), thai hot chilis, one red bell, about 10 green bell peppers, cilantro, dill, parsley, thyme, oregano, rosemary, radishes (done) lettuce (on 2nd planting), carrots (about 10 harvested, much more to go) kale, green beans, onions, some cherry tomatos, cucumbers, zucchini, patty pan squash.
Almost ready:
fennel (weird time but I am happy), tomatoes, rest of peppers (banana, paprika, more reds, plenty of heirlooms,) cantaloupe, watermelon (both have small little ones growing), tomatillos, strawberries (small fruits always on), grapes are doing really well for vinegar).
Fail -
Corn (we had too fertile soil) and chives (note to the hubs, plant them in a pot)
