Children's photog vs wedding photog?
I was noticing that recommendations for good family/infant/children photographers weren't remotely close to the names suggested when looking for a good wedding photographer.
I had always assumed that the same skills you want in a wedding photographer would be the same in a family photographer. Is there something that would preclude you from going with your wedding photographer?
I was curious on what I was missing....is it price related? Do most couples who are starting a family look elsewhere beyond their wedding photographer? TIA for any commentary!

Re: Children's photog vs wedding photog?
Some wedding photographers do a lot of family photography as well, but others seem to specialize in one or the other. Also, many photographers who do a lot of weddings will not want to schedule a family session for a Saturday in the spring or summer, which is a convenient time for a lot of families.
I loved my wedding photographer, but I doubt I would hire him to take photos of my future children. Here are some of the difference from my perspective:
Qualities I look for in a wedding photographer:
-Cool person with whom I want to share my day
-Plenty of experience so I am confident he/she won't miss any important moments
-A portfolio of wedding photos I love
Qualities I look for in a family photographer
-Good with kids so they can capture the family in a more natural state
-A portfolio of family photos I love
-Price
-Location

We have become great friends with our wedding photographer. She does families also if you are looking (http://allisonmayer.com), I was curious so I just IM'ed her. This is what she said,
" I like to do a little of everything. It keeps my perspective fresh and my creativity out of a rut. Some people really love weddings and do them exclusively, same with children/fam portraits. I personally love being behind the camera and I don't care what the subject matter is. Each type of photography has its own set of challenges. Usually lifestyle (also knows as natural light or on location) photographers are going to have a broader client base. People with a studio will more likely have a specialty. Does that answer your question?"
I personally wouldn't work with anyone else. Aliy has become more than just our photographer. I think building a relationship with the person you are going to entrust your family memories to is the most important thing. So if your wedding photographer was someone you really liked and enjoyed I would stick with it. If you didn't think they were the best fit for you then shop around.
I think its what ever feels right for you. Don't get hung up on labels.
