Considering a move to TX

Hi Ladies! I'm wondering if anyone here has relocated from another state to TX (Austin area) and how they like it, or if the locals can tell me what they love about their state. My DH is originally from there, but hasn't lived there in over 20 yrs. All of his family is there and now my MIL is offering for us to take over her house. I don't know how all that works but it seems like an opportunity we really need to think about. We currently live in a HCOL state so I would have to figure out what we would need to make in order to have a decent lifestyle there as I'm sure we would both take salary cuts if we relocated. It's a lot to think about and scary!

Re: Considering a move to TX

  • Hi!  To me, it would help if you had specific questions.  Here are some things I love (but I guess it'll vary depending on where you live in TX)...

    -The people are friendly.

-There are tons of things to do (I'm talking Austin here...not specifically TX).

-You can find just about any landscape you want without leaving the state.

-We have ice days when there's hardly any ice or snow :) (I'm a teacher.)

-Homes are priced very well in comparison to other states. (I think...)

What do you do and where would you live?  I think that'll make a difference, too.

  • hi there.  we moved to TX from a HCOL area two years ago.  there are definitely HCOL areas in austin (think downtown area, lake areas) and LCOL areas (the 'burbs) but even the LCOL areas aren't *too* far from DT.  that being said, we thought we'd make approximately the same salary-wise when we moved.  big shock.  huge.  partially it's because my industry background isn't here and partially because I was grossly overpaid in my last job back home.  if you can find something here with the same salary-range as what you currently do, you're golden IMO.

the weather (I'm talking to you, summer) is definitely something to get used to, unless you are already used to triple digit heat for 3 months straight.  if so, you'll adjust quickly!

  • If I read correctly, you are taking over a house from your MIL. So I don't know if that means if you are taking over her mortgage or if she is just giving it to you, but I would look into how much the taxes will be. That could be a factor in if you want to take over the house. Taxes on houses close in are very high.

On another note, I love Austin, and, honestly, I don't ever want to live anywhere else but here.

  • Hi there!  DH and I just relocated from up north and are absolutly loving Austin!  Don't know where you are comming from but the COL down here is not much different from where we were in Omaha, NE.  One thing to keep in mind is that there is no income tax down here and depending on what you are used to, the sales tax is quite high.  I forgot that the first time I went shopping and got sticker shock!  Also, the winters are AWESOME, but the summers (I'm discovering) are brutal.

Would be happy to share other info if you want to talk.  I live in NW austin, near Lake Travis.

to clarify, no state income tax.  and, IMHO, it's a moot point since the state has to make it up somewhere - i.e. higher property taxes and/or sales tax.

In almost all cases yes but I'm from the Chicago area and property and sale taxes are higher there (in the suburbs) than in ATX and they have state income taxes

In general, I like Austin a lot.  I do miss the seasons and wear sweaters on days I shouldn't just because I have a nice winter wardrobe still.  Most everyone here is super friendly and I've found the cost of living to be very reasonable.  I would 100% rec living in Austin
