Flower Question

I am new to the nest and stink at dealing with flowers. One of our wedding gifts was bulbs of calla lillies and daisies. Can I plant these now? I live in CT. I don't want to plant them now if they will just die. I have no green thumb!

TIA!

Re: Flower Question

  • I'd hit the internet for when you can plant them, and if they will survive all year. Calla lillies may not work outdoors in CT. You may have to pot them.

  • I'm in the NE corner...callas can be tough but I've had some luck with them.  Sadly, it's usually hit or miss and (being honest) I've lost more than I can count.  As for when to plant if you want to take the chance (I probably would)...keep somewhere cool and dark until the fall and then plant.  Mid-Oct through mid-Nov is great.  I usually store my bulbs in a brown paper bag in the basement.
  • My mom in Northern NJ digs up her call bulbs ever fall and has them winter indoors and replants in the spring.   Same with Dahlias.  I would plant the daisy's in September after the August heat.  I am assuming they are just rootstock and not actual plants since Daisies are not bulbs.  If they are plants, put them in now and just water deeply this summer till they are established.
