What can I use to remove paint?

The previous owners of our house painted the doorknobs and it looks gross. Is there anything eco-friendly I can use to get the paint off?

Re: What can I use to remove paint?

  • Like latex paint on a metal doorknob?  What were they thinking?

I think your best bet might be to try to sand it off lightly, and repaint with a spray paint designed to go on metal (Krylon or Rustoleum, I think).  If it were wood, your could use a heat gun, but I'm not sure if it works on a metal surface.

  • I wish I knew why people do these things. It's a beautiful, old, solid wood door...with a white back. They painted the entire inside of the bathroom white. The trim around the windows, baseboards, door, and doorknob are all white. UGH. Now it's up to me to make it look better. :)
  • Are you talking about the doorknob or the door?

Sanding is not going to work on metal surfaces and traditional paint strippers can be too harsh for antique metal.  Instead try baking soda and water in a boiling pot.  Here's an explanation:

For the door if it has many layers of paint on it you're going to be stuck using a chemical stripper.  If it only has one light layer you can probably get away with just sanding it but beware the paint will be stuck in every little nook & cranny so to remove that you will need to take off quite a bit of wood.  This means the door may fit loosely in the frame or may not line up with the latch correctly.  So try to take off as little as possible.

  • Wow!! Is there anything baking soda can't do?! I will definitely try this! Thanks.
