something running in background, what is it?

I have a Dell Inspiron computer that I bought a few months ago. All has been going well with it. I use TrendMicro for the virus protection on it.

The past week or a bit more when I shut it down it will ask me every time if I want to Force Shutdown because there is a program running in the background.

How do I figure out what it is?

Also, my TrendMicro continually turns off. Every day, once a day, I have to manually turn it on when the alert pops up telling me that TrendMicro is turned off.

What do you recommend I do?

Re: something running in background, what is it?

  • Go to your startup menu, select run, and then type in msconfig.  You will be able to see the programs that are currently running on your system as well as those that run when you start up your computer.

  • I did that and there are a ton of programs currently running. Unfortunately I am not computer savvy so I don't know what is ok to be running on my computer.

  • The only things that should be running are the programs that you are currently using.

For example this is what I have running on mine right now. (And I have the same machine as you).

If you see something that shouldn't be running (your aren't currently using). Just highlight it and click "End Task".

If that doesn't fix it you might need to go and un-install some programs. Have you been downloading a lot of programs (different tool bars on your browser can cause this)

If you have any questions feel free to email me. TheNerdyKatie@gmail

    Hope that helps!
