Hey ladies,
I've been lurking around on this board for a while, picking up pearls of wisdom along the way. I guess now would be as good a time as any to introduce myself. I live in south Jersey and am trying, much to DHs chagrin, to live as green as possible. One of these days I might get around to starting a blog, but I have much more fun reading everyone elses.
I don't remember whose, but I read in someones blog about a SIGG recall and I threw both of mine out after looking inside to find the solid copper w no sign of the new coating. Now I need some suggestions on a quality, 'green' larger sized bottle. I've googled and found some, it's just nice to hear other people's opinion.
Thanks!

Re: Rec your water bottle
I've had most of the bottles out there and still haven't found my perfect one. : )
So far, here are the ones I've tried and the pros/cons I came up with.
Klean Kanteen
Pros: narrow bottle fits nicely in cup holder and backpack without tearing the pocket, wide mouth opening so no floaties get stuck inside when washing, stainless steel with no liner, 27 ounces means I only need to drink about two a day, water always tasted cool
Cons: dropped it and dented it so it wobbles, don't like drinking out of metal because it feels weird to me, the lid isn't tethered and nobody seems to make one that is tethered that doesn't leak
Nalgene BPA free 32 ounce wide mouth bottle
Pros: held lots of water, wide mouth meant no floaties, tethered cap, leakproof and dent-proof, held up for years (only got replaced because it got left on a train), pretty designs and colors to choose from
Cons: hard to drink out of when driving, too big for cup holder & backpack pocket,
Nalgene 32 ounce narrow mouth bottle
Pros: held lots of water, tethered cap, leak and dent-proof, pretty designs and colors
Cons: easy to drink out of while driving, floaties after going through the dishwasher, too big for cup holder & backpack pocket, replaced because it wasn't BPA free
Nalgene On-the-Go (OTG)
Pros: fits in cup holder and backpack, wide mouth so no floaties, durable
Cons: doesn't hold as much water as I would like, not as many design options, original lid was not leakproof and was hard to open
My current bottle is the Nalgene OTG with a capCap that I bought separately. The new cap is tethered and leak-proof, and has a narrow opening to drink out of (great for driving) but fits on the wide mouth bottle so no floaties get stuck in there. It also works great on my husband's regular wide mouth Nalgene; he doesn't have the cup holder and backpack issues that I have with a bottle that's wider, though.
DH and I have Klean Kateen and we're happy.
I've bought several stainless steel ones and have been disappointed in most of them. One, i discovered that I don't like the screw top ones, they are too difficult for me to deal with in the car. Two, most don't hold enough water for me. However, I recently found one that I love at Walmart of all places. It holds about 24 oz of water, has a flip/straw top and best of all, it was only $5.
i'll add my 2 cents...
i have a KK. like it, but find the mouth of the bottle is a weird diameter. I always dribble on mysef while drinking.
I have a new Sigg. I like the mouth, but the liner thing annoys me. how do we know it's safe...i've been down that road before.
i recently picked up a Camebak. I hemmed and hawed for a while about getting it b/c it wasn't SS. but i came to the realization that i really like being able to see how much i'm drinking. it's the positive feedback thing. I really like hte straw to drink from. very easy to use with one hand and fits in a cup holder. i also bought one for my DS. he loves it (and no backwash!)
I'd like to use a glass water bottle, but i'm clumsy....

this is the best water bottle i've ever owned. it's so fantastic that after i lost my first one, i searched for two months until i found a store that sold them and then bought two more. FYI, i've only ever found them at target, but not at all targets.
it holds a lot of water and is spill proof. there's no straw or small parts to collect nastiness, and i feel better when i can see inside the bottle. to drink, you pop the lid open (there's a locking mechanism so that this doesn't happen accidentally), and then drink from a spout that's of a good size but small enough so that spilling is rare. it says to handwash, but we've put these in the dishwasher for years with no issue. i love that i know it's definitely getting cleaned and disinfected (i'm really wary of the popular aluminum ones). i'm rough on my water bottles - i have dropped this off of the roof of my car several times with no cracking or leakage.
ETA: and if you're into tallying your water intake, there's a meter on this bottle that let's you keep track every time you fill up it; you just turn the ring at the bottle edge of the cap.

I have an insulated kleen kanteen. I did have a sig but it smelled no matter how I attempted to clean it. The insulated kk is awesome. Hot drinks stay hot for a long time & when I make iced coffee at home, the ice is still solid after my 8 hour work day despite no coffee.
I have a KK and love it. I like that they come in different sizes (my son has the kid-sized one, and you can put a sippy top on it) and have all sorts of different lids. So the whole family can have different sized bottles, and we can exchange lids as needed- ie, my son is now transitioning to the sport cap.
We had siggs before and hated them. The KK's do dent a little, but only when my son throws them around. Compared to the Siggs, they are great.
