::head smack:: need compost help
DH just informed me that he found a large ant infestation in our compost pile...so he sprayed it with Raid
If this is what I was planning to use for my garden next year, do I need to start over? Could I theoretically still use it for planting flowers and just start a new pile for the garden?
Re: ::head smack:: need compost help
Big DH fail! That really sucks! My hubbie would be in sooo much trouble if he did that! Personally, I wouldn't risk it for your veggie garden. I would use that pile for ornamental plantings and start a new one for the veggie garden. And have a sit-down with DH about why you started a compost pile in the first place!
ETA: Ants in your compost pile means it's too dry, fruit flies means it's too wet. Next time, tell him to soak the heck out of the pile for a few days. The ants will leave. I water our compost pile throughly once or twice a week. In addition to preventing ants, the pile breaks down so much quicker.
Yea I looked up the correct way to deal with ants after this happened and found that it was either too dry or we didn't have enough balance between browns and greens. We have very sandy dirt here (becuase we're near the river) so the ground dries out very quickly, thus attracting ants. They are a constant battle in our yard.
DH now knows how to rid them from the compost though... and really, we have plenty of time to get more ready in time for our spring planting so it's no biggie.
